Around the World in 80 Days Reviews
This adaptation of the Jules Verne novel has its moments, but infinitely more interesting than what appears on screen are the stories surrounding its maker.

An elongated, swollen film, somehow both frantic and plodding, with more cameos than substance, 80 Days is an extravaganza with little to do other than entertain. But it knows that and isn’t really trying to be anything else.

Around the World in Eighty Days is like a serial; a serial in brilliant Technicolor and a system by now called, I believe, Cinestage, ending in the most ingenious credits I have ever seen. It is a journey through scenes where the sun is aways shining.

It’s just about the most delightful way of spending three hours that I can think of offhand. At last the wide screen and full-color films have been used to make a picture that is worthy of them and appropriate to them.

Outstanding in the long part of Mr. Fogg's faithful valet, Passepartout, is Cantinflas, a sad-faced comedian with a delightful economy of gesture and expression, who adds just the right note of implausibility to the whole highly improbable affair.

The predictable conclusion, which brings the success of the odyssey down to the wire, still contains a hint of satisfaction.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Aug 15, 2020
You see every penny of its extremely generous budget onscreen. Even when you may not wish to.

Jules Verne's comedy-adventure about a trip encircling the globe in 1872 has been turned into a richly entertaining three-ring circus of a movie...

For an adventure yarn based on a story of intrepid adventurers circumnavigating the globe, this barely scrapes off the ground.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 20, 2019
The result... is a rollicking three hours.

With its lazy, somnambulant pace and endless stream of cameos, Around the World in 80 Days seems to be unfolding in real time.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 2, 2018
It is by far too long and has lost a significant amount of its wonder, but spending a rainy Sunday afternoon with Verne's adventure seeking story is a surprisingly easy, diverting experience.

An epic very much of its time, this vastly entertaining star-studded travelogue was put together (with some difficulty) by the great showman Michael Todd.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 28, 2014
Michael Anderson's direction couldn't be more unimaginative and flat. A movie like this should be swimming in creative whimsy, and a sense of wonder. There's nothing of that sort here.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Jul 9, 2013
The wonder is that this Polyphemus of productions does not simply collapse of its own overweight; but, thanks principally to Showman Todd, the picture skips along with an amazing lightness.

Thanks to its grand scale and great central performances by Niven and Cantinflas, the original fantastic voyage still holds up very respectably.

Just goes to show you what dreck can win the Oscar if you got the money and know how to promote your product.
| Original Score: C | Jun 24, 2008
With a smash lineup of stars in major and minor parts, Todd has turned out a surefire hit.

Everything about this big, beautiful movie smacks of authenticity, excitement, and massive showmanship.

Proof that you can buy an Academy Award.
