Bully. Coward. Victim. The Story of Roy Cohn Reviews
Meeropol makes a compelling case for Cohn as “bully,” she doesn’t make a clear case for Cohn as “coward” or “victim”.

As the granddaughter of the Rosenbergs, Meeropol has every reason to hate Cohn. How shocking then that she manages to show so much empathy for the man.

Who would have thought, [Roy] Cohen's life, as existential tragedy.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 31, 2021
Meeropol - a granddaughter of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, who were executed for espionage largely because of Cohn's efforts - exposes her subject's lifelong hypocrisy throughout her engaging and infuriating film.

Bully. Coward. Victim. The Story of Roy Cohn isn't the vindictive vendetta that people might assume it is ... but it definitely reveals him to be a self-hating bully who took out his hatred on other people.

Meeropol's documentary is a bit of a patchwork in itself. She edits awkwardly between episodes, time periods and topics that create a general impression that most viewers no doubt already hold - that Roy Cohn was evil.

It may not be possible to explain everything about a conflicted and controversial figure like Cohn, but Meeropol makes a valiant effort.

It's easy to watch the film and hate Cohn even more than history books might have led you to, but there's little here to paint him in anything resembling a complex or sympathetic light.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jun 27, 2020
Serves as a worthwhile catchall of Cohn's infamy.

While a worthwhile examination of Cohn's life, Bully. Coward. Victim is less compelling than the earlier Cohn doc,
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 26, 2020
Another solid survey of Cohn's career and personal life that inevitably struggles to humanize an inhumane man.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 25, 2020
I think that the film would have been more interesting if it had really focused on what Roy Cohn meant to this family, the Meeropols.
| Jun 24, 2020
It's very interesting and watchable, although I don't think it's particularly revelatory.

A fascinating look at Cohn and a major addition to studies of the Trump-era. It couldn't come at a better time.

Raw, personal and compassionate...
| Jun 22, 2020
Meeropol might have made a better film had she expanded her focus beyond Cohn and delved further into her family's life.
| Jun 22, 2020
The film is required viewing if you want to know more about the true history of America.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Jun 22, 2020
Yes, Roy Cohn had his fingers in a lot of pots, but Meeropol never makes clear why his influence and dishonesty was or is significant outside of the Rosenbergs.

Trump's evil mentor is revealing in this fascinating and personal HBO documentary that lifts the veil on Roy Cohn's vicious tactics and trying to explain how they sadly still live on with the current occupent of the White House.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 20, 2020
Meeropol paints a portrait of Cohn as a despicable liar who was nonetheless very complicated.
