Argento's Dracula Reviews

I will not go so far as to say that I understand Dracula 3D, not even close, but I know that its sensibility effectively absorbed me. When it comes to the works of Dario Argento, that is all I have come to expect on a first viewing.

If we consider that some of the embellishments taken are intentional and used to recapture the look of European films of yonder, we can enjoy the film for its nostalgic touches without taking it too seriously. [Full review in Spanish]

Whether Mr. Argento meant this to be A) serious, B) silly, or C) a combination of both, the end result is, I'm sorry to say, almost completely unwatchable.

Argento hasn't been this playful in years, and neither has "Dracula."

...the film should be retitled "Dario Argento's Whatever Popped into My Head."

| Original Score: 1/5 | Jan 29, 2014

Dario Argento is much better than this. Hell, Asia Argento is much better than this.

It manages, barely, to be stupid enough at enough points to be fun to watch.

| Original Score: 3/10 | Oct 24, 2013

In the grand scheme of Argento's films, Dracula will never be more than a footnote...But fans of horror all'Italia won't want to miss it.

Through 3D glasses too darkly, the extra dimension is not taken advantage of -- and in fact appears detrimental.

John Carpenter once called (Argento) his greatest influence. After this, he is surely his biggest disappointment.

... perfect for a living room full of inebriated hecklers to have their way with it... you'll never look at a praying mantis the same way ever again.

| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Oct 6, 2013

goes completely bonkers by taking the powers of Dracula to a ridiculous level

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 4, 2013

As he did with his adaptation of "Phantom of the Opera," Argento offers up a version that plays like a choppy condensation based on hazy memories of the book, then augments it with nudity and gore.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 4, 2013

When insects are the best thing in your movie, it's probably time to retire.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 3, 2013

Argento ... brings enough moments of kinky madness to his not-great "Dracula" to indicate there may yet be greatness lurking within him. Here's hoping.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Oct 3, 2013

From the opening credit sequence using a ridiculous score that sounds more at home in a B-sci-fi film from the 50s to the special effects that were done by the lowest bidder, you know you're going to be in store for something that's sub-par.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Oct 3, 2013

It's a stain on Dracula's good name, and a waste of time for even those looking for the cheapest of vampiric thrills.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Oct 3, 2013

A flaccid retelling of Bram Stoker's immortal tale of monstrous obsession, reduced here to a filmed community theater rehearsal with Full Sail freshman visual effects.

| Original Score: D | Oct 3, 2013

Argento strands his actors in a variety of crummy master shots and close-ups that accentuate their every exaggerated gesture and line-reading.

| Original Score: D | Oct 3, 2013

Some viewers will get unintended jollies from a gigantic, rampaging grasshopper; others, from the director's queasy-making penchant for unclothing his exhibitionist daughter Asia.
