Exhibiting Forgiveness Reviews
A beautiful and brilliant movie!
Exhibiting Forgiveness is a beautiful portrayal of family and trust. Of forgiveness and remorse. It's a delicate and emotional film, one of quiet power. Tarrell is a successful artist. He is happily married and has a precocious little boy. But sometimes he wakes in the middle of the night with nightmares, a legacy of his traumatic childhood where he was mistreated by his father. We later see this in flashbacks. When Tarrell returns to his hometown to see his mother he has a surprise. His father turns up, the first time in 15 years that father and son have seen each other. We see over time how Tarrell comes to terms with this. We see his anger, but also see him contemplating if he should forgive at all. This superb film is nuanced and intelligent. It's contemplative and instructive. And Andre Holland is an absolute standout, as usual, as Tarrell. A very fine film that deserves to be seen by many.
Beautiful in all ways. Beautiful artwork, beautiful music/singing and powerful depiction of generational trauma and the effects it has. Very moving. Acting was superb. Thanks to ALL involved.
Exhibiting Forgiveness is a powerful movie that depicts real-life generational cycles that repeat and ultimately culminate in forgiveness. Each character plays a vital role in this cycle of healing. The movie is thought-provoking and beautifully crafted, with subtle moments of healing woven throughout. I watched it twice and discovered new details I hadn’t noticed the first time. This movie deserves an award.
Watching this was all too relatable having a parent that was an addict. I cried alot. It made me think about forgiveness I've given and also withheld.
Incredibly moving film, with a wealth of depth and soul. A deep look into generational trauma, healing, and the process of forgiveness, change, redemption, and acceptance. Extremely powerful.
[Spoilers].... I appreciate the concepts of forgiveness to be set free as you see in the end when he cuts/"sets" his younger and current self free from the pain from forgiving his father. But he's never truly forgiven as he's clearly cutting him out. It feels more he's just come to peace with his trauma. And I think they do a good job balancing themes of parenting, drugs, religion, and forgiveness but at a certain point it felt like the same old story despite progression in plot. It is frustrating that La'Ron is viewed as a byproduct of his environment, despite Tarrell going through a lot of similar hardships and turning out miles better, and I would have appreciated at least some discussion on this topic of him being a better man than his father due to this breaking of the cycle. All in all I enjoyed it, and found it a artistically beautiful movie, but found a couple of pain points.
A heartbreaking, moving, deeply personal, raw and hopeful drama. Exhibiting Forgiveness seems like a simple and practical drama, but its depth is much greater than it seems. Titus Kaphar's debut film is a type of story that is difficult to tell in the cinematic language, in the sense that its structure includes the ambitious idea of separating forgiveness from reconciliation. A brilliant dialogue about forgiveness and a lecture on how to portray generational trauma enrich this story that gives us the feeling of glimpsing someone's real life. The way art is produced from experiences, especially painful ones, are the emotional layers of this film that transform our ability to empathize with individuals in their way of coping with grief and pain. A must-see film for 2024! An unbeatable directorial debut.
very emotionally moving movie. a must see for anyone who has experienced this.
This has to be the cinematic gem of the year! There is something everyone can relate to in this sensitive work -- for me it was the family dynamics that stole my heart.
Best film of 2024. The writing, acting, art was all too raw and truthful. It was gut-wrenching to watch, but a story that needed to be told.
Overly pandering. And honestly not even decent writing not acting. Not sure why everyone decided to push this movie. It’s just bad. Slow and bad.
This movie will really make you think and reflect. it's beyond relatable to many.
Well worn genre, but well acted and carried emotional weight.
I loved the realness of the situations depicted. The art was magnificent! Each character was well developed and the acting superb!
Intimate and moving. This film is deeply emotional and captures the pain of processing tough experiences.
This movie is well acted and written, and it pulls at every possible heartstring.
"Exhibiting Forgiveness" is a excellent movie that examines what forgiveness means through the lenses of addiction and art. It's well written, well acted, and well directed. There were a lot of layers that have kept me thinking about the topic.
So many themes that hit home for me...could discuss for hours
Excellent and healing. Chicken soup for the soul. I left reflecting on my own healing journey of broken parents. very good!
