I thought this was a good movie despite it being so panned by the critics. I believe critics are subject to industry group-think, since their profession (if you can call it that) is at risk and scrutiny if they stray from what their industry counterparts rate. The plot is somewhat flat but no worse than standard dramatic Hollywood fare. However, this film contains some of the best mountain climbing scenes ever committed to film. They are real, underrated and accurately portray Alpine climbing techniques and equipment of the 1930s.

Although it is a bit slow moving, it has rewarding aspects. The cinematography is grand, fine score and it is very well produced. It also is boosted by the presence of Sean Connery. The location shooting in Switzerland is also a plus.
