When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman), middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up -- and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio -- the old gang may not be happy to see him.

Critics Consensus

The look of Hook is lively indeed but Steven Spielberg directs on autopilot here, giving in too quickly to his sentimental, syrupy qualities.

Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune A woefully uneven retelling of the ''Peter Pan'' story. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times For very much like Peter, it has clearly gotten harder for this director to break free of the lure of material things and believe in simple magic. Richard W I saw this movie at the theater (as an adult) on opening weekend when it first came out. I’m a fan of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan story. I’m a fan of Steven Spielberg as a filmmaker. I’m a fan of Robin Williams as an entertainer (and Dustin Hofmann too). So I was expecting greatness! And, despite Whst most critics said at the time, I believe I got it. I love the idea of Peter Pan growing up and forgetting his fantasy past. But then, through a series of events has to return to Neverland. It’s an interesting new take on an old story. And, oh my gawd, the sets on this film are absolutely awe inspiring. That’s because they’re not CGI, they’re real! Hook may be one of the last films to use actual real sets rather than just green-screening everything. And real just looks more magical, in my opinion. Now let’s talk about Dustin Hoffman. Is he not the absolute best Captain Hook there ever was? And there’s been a LOT of great Captain Hooks (e.g., Jason Isaacs I the 2003 Peter Pan). Bob Hoskins was incredible as Mr. Smee too. I stopped watching Hook after Robin Williams died because it just made me cry throughout it. But after enough time had passed, I finally could watch it again. And I’m reminded that it’s a masterpiece (despite what critics think). I wouldn’t change a thing*. *Well, I’d love to see a restored 4K version of Hook with the songs included, as it stated out being a musical (or, so I’ve heard). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/26/25 Full Review Rhyan D This is a great film. I have no idea why the "critics" gave it such a low score. Robin Williams is a genius, a legend, and the greatest Peter Pan to ever appear in the big screen! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Ciara B I genuinely am so baffled by the low rating. This is truly one of the greatest childhood movies, I just introduced my 4&5 yr old to this movie this evening and they were engrossed from the second it started. I even cried a few times with pure happiness for the memories it brought back Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/29/25 Full Review Laur M No idea how this could've been rated 29%. This defined my childhood. I was completely enthralled by this movie. I watched it for the first time in 25 years this past weekend and it was just as perfect as it was then. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/01/25 Full Review Michael R Hook is a masterpiece of film. There is nothing more to say. It’s perfect. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Joseph C I don't know why this has such a low rating from the critics. But this movie is one of the top ten movies of all time in my life. It is extremely nostalgic for me.I can easily watch this once a year and love it every time. Robin williams in his peak .. JOHN williams (need i say more?) and i love it. Great job Steven Spielberg seriously. Don't listen to the naysayers. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Read all reviews
