When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman), middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up -- and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio -- the old gang may not be happy to see him.

Critics Consensus

The look of Hook is lively indeed but Steven Spielberg directs on autopilot here, giving in too quickly to his sentimental, syrupy qualities.

Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune A woefully uneven retelling of the ''Peter Pan'' story. Rated: 2.5/4 •  Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times For very much like Peter, it has clearly gotten harder for this director to break free of the lure of material things and believe in simple magic. Audience Member It's a classic 90's movie that still holds up today. Robin Williams plays an amazing Peter Pan. The movie is about not acting too serious and you need to keep a child like part of you. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/27/25 Full Review Joe F It blows my mind how bitter critics were about this movie. Incredible set design. A fantastic performance by Robin for children and Parents alike. Dustin Hoffman couldn't have been a better Captain Hook, there has yet to be a captain hook that could compare. Bob Hoskins somehow a loveable dirt bag Smee. The Neverland depicted in this film was a place I dreamed of visiting every time I watched it and still thought about long after, also always made me crave a hotdog. The feast and food scenes are so much fun and beautiful. Hooks ship is beautiful. Just incredible to think it has a 29%, I love film and can be somewhat picky but this has been one of my favorites since I was a child and will always be. Please, give it a try. You won't be disappointed! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/21/25 Full Review
