Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole Reviews

Once again, Snyder backs a project more about visual presentation than storytelling, a trend that’s getting old for those waiting for the director to turn out a film worthy of his evident talent.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Aug 3, 2023

An intelligent, often thrilling excuse to soar the skies with a beauty and grace rarely found in digital animation outside of the Pixar stable.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | May 20, 2021

A likely Oscar nominee this year almost solely on the basis of its wondrous visuals.

| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 13, 2020

How come the most genuinely affecting, emotional movie of the year is about animated owls?

| Original Score: B | Jul 14, 2020

Ignore the overly wordy yet forgettable title and somewhat clunky plot, and get lost in the jaw-droppingly gorgeous scenery.

| Jul 24, 2019

Undeniably beautiful, but when the story is this uninteresting and uninspired, no amount of spectacular visuals can make an audience, let alone one filled with restless youngsters, care.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Jun 7, 2019

With jeopardy at almost every turn, this is certainly no movie for toddlers.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 24, 2018

Of course, the three dimensional scenes are a real delight, and the film's cinematography is a thing of beauty. [Full review in Spanish]

First of all, the animation is nuts. The owls look like actual owls, only with emotions and jokes and magical warrior helmets. Secondly, all the cutest types of owl are included.

. . .the film employs a staggering array of British and Australian character actors. . .who bluster on about nobility and the savagery of war in plummy accents, then take to the skies, with razored claws to tear each other to shreds.

| Aug 22, 2017

a thrilling and exciting tale that the whole family can enjoy

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 5, 2014

While it was a delight to look at, it might have been something really special had it had a stronger, more compelling story behind it.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Sep 23, 2012

the story's inherent sense of fantasy and genuinely felt moments of exhilaration...and danger...keeps us engaged - for a time, at least

| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 30, 2012

| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 24, 2011

It's a shame that the painstaking work of the CGI animators was ultimately doomed to failure by the script.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 14, 2011

A wrong-headed and milling attempt at a "final conflict" tale like the Fellowship of the Ring.

| May 25, 2011

It's tough-minded and anything but happy.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 4, 2011

Only the most saintly of viewers could forgive the film all of its storytelling lapses [but] there's always going to be some stupidly gorgeous tableau to hold your attention.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Mar 28, 2011

The repetition fatigue that plagued 300 also weakens Legend of the Guardians, but otherwise it's an entertaining, action-packed fable

| Original Score: B- | Mar 9, 2011

...Legends Of The Guardians is nonetheless an excellent adventure that comes with plenty of heart, spectacle and that welcome darker edge that helps make a family movie great.
