She has three half-siblings all from different fathers and none of them have adapted well to post-war Japan, either unable or unwilling to function or too shrewd and manipulative for their own good. Takamine seems to find a separate peace, but Naruse hints that this might not actually be allowable. As in his other films, it seems possible to lose oneself in the world and relationships created here. That was because it had SO MANY CHARACTERS!!! Too many in fact, and I couldn't figure them all out! Which may have been why I didn't like this. Also, I don't know if I like Hideko Takamine...
