Richard Whittaker Austin Chronicle As a record of a cultural institution, and the loss of a forum for art and community, Other Music is interesting enough, and arguably fascinating for fans of esoterica. But the camera should have taken a few more steps out of the door. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 30, 2020 Full Review Jem Aswad Variety More than any other visual document, it celebrates and immortalizes the culture of the record store and record nerds. May 6, 2019 Full Review John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter An exciting reminder of what culture-retailers can be, if customers don't retreat to the cloud. May 5, 2019 Full Review Adam Lowes HeyUGuys A beautiful and bittersweet eulogy for a community brought together by a shared passion as they fight to keep a dream alive. Rated: 4/5 Dec 22, 2020 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills ...a star-studded remembrance of the badly missed titular NYC record store... Sep 15, 2020 Full Review Morgan Rojas Cinemacy A sensational watch, any music buff will tell you that Other Music in NYC was nirvana (pun intended). Audience Member Smart and warm. A loving portrait of a place that meant the world to a lot of people, and formed the heart of a community. Plus: good music! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a celebration of music with an on-the-ground view of the last days of an iconic NYC store; a celebration of its legacy, how music influenced it and how the store influenced the music that its customers listened to, and how the store now exists only in memories and the remnants of the indelible sounds that it championed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a well-crafted doc that tells the story of a great record store that's no longer there. Even if records aren't important to you, its a great window into how communities can be anchored by small local shops. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved this movie almost as much as I used to love record stores. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member The fate of the Outer Music store comes very early in the documentary. And, much of the movie involves talk with background music. Alternative, off-the-grid music fans will appreciate the store's vision and a few celebrity customers wax nostalgic. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
