Pumpkinhead Reviews
Pumpkinhead is a film that has a great atmosphere and incredible effects. It is a film that holds up astonishingly well after all these years. The acting is very good especially the lead. Very glad Lance had a main lead role for once. You could really tell he and the others have it their all. I also have to commend the attention to detail. Set pieces, the witches cabin, the rural homes all looked very real. Lastly of course the creature itself is an original and intimidating design with a lot of character! Great work from Stan Winston's crew and convincing movements in the suit from Tom Woodruff Jr! What's left to say other then yes...you must see this movie.
The teenagers really dragged this film down. Otherwise it's not bad at all but I was very aware they were hal-heartedly acting in a movie.
🎃 Why is this considered a cult classic? 🥱 A simple revenge story, extremely two-dimensional characters, a monster that looks like a cheap knock-off of the Alien Queen, a very strange score, and poor direction—these are usually ingredients I can enjoy. But here, as I watch, there's no excitement, no amusement, not even real interest because everything just feels so dull. Eventually, an hour has passed, and suddenly all the teens are dead, and the final showdown is about to start. 🤔 In capable hands, this could have actually turned into something worthwhile. There are numerous shots and tension-building sequences that could have gained a lot of momentum with better direction. The set design and creature design are actually pretty great. Unfortunately, it lacks the metaphorical "red thread" to hold everything together and carry it to the finish line. Luckily, Winston stuck to effects and makeup and spared us any further attempts at directing.
As a horror movie fan, I’m so glad I finally got around to watching Pumpkinhead. Not only does this movie have good scares, it also has some very emotional moments. I thought Lance Henriksen and his son had such good chemistry together. I really believed they could be father and son
Over the top and simplistic in certain ways to be sure, but actually kind of sophisticated in others. Mainly watching it because of something mentioned about it by an mkultra whistleblower, but don't regret having seen it. 3.25/5
A really nice creature movie with horror legend lance hendriksen and to top it off it has a cool monster gory kills a solid plot and a few scares.
I love this film but I have to be fair, there are a few problem like when haggis gets blood from Ed Harley and you can literally see the blade is leaking it, on the other hand the suit is incredible and unlike 3&4 didn't resort to CGI, it all practically effect from stan Winston, so you can't get much better
First of all, I really had a good time watching this. Its a horror movie that has eluded me and been on my radar for years. Big fan of Stan Winston. His artistic eye is all over this. Great lighting and cinematography. Creature effects are as you would expect of Stan the man are great. We have a few formulaic parts to it, but thats ok. Good cast apart from religious girl, who when she gets killed, you are like meh!!! Watched it today on my day off and really enjoyed it. Erickson is great as always, and the young boy from Jerry McGuire is like ahhhh. WHYYYYYY?? The young lad who explains the witch and the monster??? You didnt need that much exposition, but a solid movie. Good horror and and dont look for anything deep here, just a fun time.
If one can look over some bad acting from a few of the teens, there is a stellar performance from Lance Henriksen, tense, atmospheric direction, and special effects far better than a typical slasher film.
Very good makeup and a story that is willing to go a step ahead, the only problem are the cartoony characters.
Pumpkinhead is one mean 🤬 creature feature horror film really amazing creature designed and a triumph performance by Lance Henriksen and this is Stan Winston's first debut director to direct this amazing grim fairy tail for adults and teens.
Had potential to be great but ended up merely mediocre.
A bad monster movie. The best part was when it ended.
This is a completely original horror film with amazing effects that capitalizes on the bond of family with a very creepy rulral southern gothic horror setting. Highly recommended for horror and practical effects fans. Director Stan Winston did a great job!
The effects have dulled over the years but Lance Henriksen is still effective as is the story.
What a movie. I highly recommend it. Go into knowing nothing. The motivation is perfect. It really has some emotional moments but they could've played it out a little more. Overall good movie and I bought it on blu ray so I can't wait to watch it again in the future. Oct 31 22
I've always liked this. It's not great but an interesting story with an awesome ending. And the practical effects by Winston are great.
A true horror classic! Stay away from Pumpkinhead, unless you're tired of living!
Call me crazy, but shouldn't the monster in a movie called Pumpkinhead have a pumpkin for a head? Instead, it basically looks like a Xenomorph with the skin of a nursing home resident. Pumpkinhead is one of those perfectly functional films that doesn't really leave too much of a mark, but does so without doing too much wrong. It trades on formula and doesn't deviate too far, with a pretty silly plot motivation (your classic 'accidentally killing a kid via dirtbike so now I'm being hunted by a supernatural creature') and a pretty light treatment of the gore; the monster itself is a bit conflicting - it's both the manifestation of a father's grief but also taunts its victims with removed bike chains. It mostly comes together thanks to Stan Winston's direction. Known primarily as an effects artist, in the director's chair Winston oversees not only a pretty decent monster costume but several bits of visual flair, including flooding sets with fog and bathing the characters in a range of vibrantly colored lights; when it's backlit this well, the film's story matters less and less. Love how the mountain kids in this film are straight out of the Dust Bowl, with flour sacks for clothing an marveling at photo cameras. (2.5/5)
The idea and premise were there. But the execution and small budget feel hamper Pumpkinhead from being a truly great horror experience. The monster design is top notch and the sound effects surrounding him really enhanced the eerie presence. But some really bad acting, strange editing, and chopping pacing left this one feeling a bit hollow. Maybe an updated reboot would fix these issues
