Rebecca Olson Bitch Media Spy is a smart and uplifting film - one that's finally worthy of Melissa McCarthy's comedic genius. Jan 28, 2021 Full Review Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine Spy is many things: A clever spoof. A chance for Melissa McCarthy and her co-stars to strut their comedic chops. An international romp. It's also a pretty darn engaging spy film. It's about a woman leaning in and finding her inner Bond. Rated: 3/4 Jun 10, 2016 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire At its core, this action-packed, globe-trotting, gender-switched Bond spoof is about lookism. May 28, 2016 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine By those very meager standards, Spy will just about do the job: it looks like someone’s in control, it’s not gratuitously offensive towards the marginalized, it has the guts to get violent and get an unexpected laugh via a jolt... Jan 23, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies If you want something fresh, intelligent, and outside of the modern norm good luck finding it here. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Even though the R-rated movie overstays its welcome by about a half-hour, preventing itself from becoming a sharp, breezy lark, it’s a James Bond parody worth a casual viewing. John F Watched it at least a handful of times and it never bores me. McCarthy and Statham are a riot together, but Byrne is my favorite. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Miguel T Spy is complete surprise, that is a parody of films like James Bond. The film is really funny, and I missed some jokes becouse I was still laughing of the ones before. Violent, enterteining and with a great ensemble, Spy is a triumph of a movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Drew F If you enjoy any of Melissa McCarthys movies, you’ll like this one. Great acting and had some funny moments. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Ken O It's worth a watch but wouldn't recommend it. (ENGLISH) Action comedies can be a double-edged sword. Some end up as a series of uninspired jokes, while others manage to balance humor with well-executed sequences. Spy falls into the second category. It's not just a parody of the spy genre; it's a film that plays with its conventions while relying entirely on the charisma of its lead actress. Melissa McCarthy shines with her physical comedy, quick dialogue, and improvisational skills, turning every scene into a show of its own. The story isn’t particularly original, but it works. It takes spy movie clichés and twists them cleverly, delivering unexpected moments and absurd situations that land well. The chemistry between McCarthy and the rest of the cast is crucial, with Jason Statham in a surprisingly comedic role and Rose Byrne as a villain who is both refined and hilarious. The movie keeps a solid pace, though some gags run a bit too long, slightly diminishing its freshness. Visually, Spy holds up without being overly flashy, but its production values are polished enough to keep it from feeling like a throwaway parody. The action sequences are well shot, with chase scenes and fights that wouldn’t be out of place in a more serious spy film. This balance between comedy and action is one of the movie’s biggest strengths. Paul Feig, who previously directed McCarthy in Bridesmaids and The Heat, knows exactly how to make the most of her talents without repeating himself. Here, he gives her room to move between over-the-top antics and heartfelt moments, ensuring that her character remains relatable rather than a mere caricature. Ultimately, Spy is an action-comedy that delivers exactly what it promises: laughs without losing momentum. It doesn’t try to reinvent the genre, but it does offer a fresh and fun take on it. And with Melissa McCarthy leading the charge, entertainment is more than guaranteed.
