Tomaz B Yeah, this was an emotional rollercoaster of a movie. It doesn't only deal with one taboo topic, it deals with many of them at once. At first glance, you might get the feeling that this is your regular criminal investigation movie, but oh boy does it develop into something much more over time. It was a bit of a slowburn, so maybe this movie isn't for anyone, but in my opinion, it makes up for that. You really should check out this underrated Belgian thriller, you might be surprised that no one ever talks about it (at least not to my knowledge). During a discussion, a friend of mine made this remark : "Whaaaa, you're Belgian and you've never heard of "The Treatment"? Dude, it's the most disturbing stuff I've ever seen; you gotta see it. Knowing my friend was quite versed in that genre, I gave it a go. And boy, what a rollecoaster... Seriously, what Hollywood studio would have dared to touch that stuff. Incredible acting, and a nice touchpoint with Flemish, which I hadn't heard in a lot of time. If you liked it, try the book : even better. It's not your ordinary criminal manhunt that follows the oft used cliche blueprint which fails to affect the viewer. Anyone watching this will thoroughly despise the villain due to his horrific actions (both past and present). The main cop conducting the investigation more often than not crosses the line during his job of duty. It's understandable due to his past, but it still rubbed me the wrong way. The acting is really really good from all parties involved... the grimy characters come across as seedy and dirty, the victims evoke a true sense of empathy, the cops (most of them) are our heroes, etc. The atmosphere the movie creates is really tense. It utilizes the score and the cinematography to create that atmosphere. And even though I've praised so many different aspects of the movie already, enough can't be said about the ending. But to me, it was too boring and so I barely made it through roughly a half of it before I started scrolling but even that not to the end. Maybe it's me and my impatience but this movie isn't in the same league of some other excellent European thrillers it purports to be (the Department Q trilogy comes to mind).
