V/H/S/85 Reviews

As a combination of short films, V/H/S/85 goes down fine. That’s all. A couple of them are great examples of the anthology format, one is so well done you wish there was more, and another feels like it outright didn’t understand the assignment.

As predictably erratic and uneven as one might’ve anticipated...

| Original Score: 2/4 | Jul 9, 2024

Six entries in, V/H/S/85 proves there are plenty more macabre stories to tell.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jul 3, 2024

One of the creepier in the film series for the way it digs into 1980s North American media and pop culture, along with the overall zeitgeist of America specifically during the ’80s.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | May 4, 2024

The V/H/S format continues to work well as a framework for a wide variety of horror cinema, and a showcase for a similarly wide range of directors.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Apr 16, 2024

Calmer and less intense than V/H/S/94 , V/H/S/85 is an easier but less interesting watch as a result.

A terrifying film about how have changed the subject of our adorations in the 80s but also in the past centuries. [Full review in Spanish]

This latest isn’t a complete bust, but nothing here is all that good, let alone memorable.

It doesn't have a real standout sequence, but this sixth entry in the found-footage anthology series is at least arguably more consistent, thanks to the fun hodgepodge of the single-tape motif.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 29, 2023

It is a tour de force of spliced segments, re-sequenced clips, jarring transitions, and grainy visuals. In rendering its collected vignettes, it is both grisly and glitchy.

A satisfying entry in the retro horror anthology franchise.

Tapping into one of the period’s common techno-oopsies drums up a sense of familiarity that works in V/H/S/85’s favor, and also allays any questions about whose shelf the tape was pulled from.

| Oct 15, 2023

Disturbing and diverse stories get under your skin with some clever ways to connect some elements throughout the tape.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 13, 2023

Each of the filmmakers has a wholly unique vision that gets you comfortable with the mundanity of its scene before pulling the rug from under you, throwing all kinds of bodily fluids on the screen to resurface your lunch and tighten your poop shoot.

| Original Score: B | Oct 13, 2023

Still the best horror franchise going, and this one even ends with a Weird Al-esque song wrapping up everything that happened.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 13, 2023

V/H/S/85 might be the horror series' best entry yet...

| Oct 12, 2023

Despite abrupt pacing and awkward structures, there’s plenty of creative, grisly, and chaotic terror to enjoy.

85's stories would be better serviced as a more full-length feature or shortened to increase the effect of what it’s looking for. It’s a tricky balance to strike in a way where things could have been a little more memorable.

I found each short to be at least interesting. Still, director Scott Derrickson’s short is the last before an epilogue, and for good reason, as it’s the most effective.

five stories bring us to that banner year with cult murders, an earthquake in Mexico, an alien creature from beyond and the return of the dead
