The cinematography is not very good, everything looks "dull" - and when the plot itself is very dull, the bland cinematography doesn't do it any favours as well (also the amount of nudity and sex scenes don't do it any favours either as it adds absolutely nothing to the plot whatsoever). As far as the Mk Ultra stuff is concerned, in spite of the film's name, it actually doesn't center around MK Ultra so much but rather the doctor conducting the experiments. It's basically a journey from "darkness to light" - the doctor starts off as very cold, clinical and emotionless, but then towards the 3rd act of the film, he finally develops a conscience and realises what he's been involved in is wrong and inhuman. The only redeemable quality of this film is the acting. The actors give good performances in spite of the dull script they've been given. If you're looking for a good MK Ultra thriller, try the "Manchurian Candidate" and give this one a hard pass. Final verdict: 1 star. MK-Ultra was a covert research program initiated by the CIA during the 1950s and 1960s to explore various forms of mind control, behavior modification, and chemical interrogation techniques. One of the aspects of MK-Ultra involved experiments with psychedelic substances, including LSD. The CIA became interested in LSD as a potential tool for mind control and interrogation purposes, as well as for possible military applications. They believed that LSD might hold the key to breaking down individuals' defenses and enhancing suggestibility. As part of the MK-Ultra program, the CIA secretly conducted experiments on both willing and unwitting individuals, including soldiers, prisoners, and even their own agents, to study the effects of LSD and other drugs on the human mind. Some of these experiments were conducted without the knowledge or consent of the test subjects, which has led to significant ethical concerns and criticism of the program. One of the most well-known incidents related to MK-Ultra was the case of Dr. Frank Olson, a CIA scientist who died under mysterious circumstances in 1953. It was later revealed that he had been unwittingly given LSD as part of an experiment, and his death raised serious questions about the ethics and safety of the CIA's research. In the mid-1970s, MK-Ultra was exposed and came under congressional investigation. As a result of the investigation, the CIA's involvement in these experiments was revealed, and the program was officially halted. However, much of the documentation related to MK-Ultra was destroyed, making it difficult to fully understand the extent and impact of the experiments. Today, the link between the CIA and LSD remains a significant part of the history of both organizations, and it serves as a cautionary tale about the potential dangers and ethical implications of conducting covert and non-consensual research on human subjects.
