What to Know

Critics Consensus

Grabbing onto thorny moral questions with its bare hands, The Last of Us' second season is a challenging expansion that retains its predecessor's superb performances and verisimilitude.

Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Often these middle seasons can feel like a weigh station, an impatient stopover until the meat of the work in the final act but The Last of Us gifts the audience with many sublime moments that make it more than worthwhile in the meantime. Apr 22, 2025 Full Review Eric Deggans NPR The show's producers seem to delight in presenting situations which look like one thing, only to shift the dynamic as circumstances change and new facts emerge, like turning a crystal in a shaft of light. Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com Trust that this show’s devotion to its characters’ humanity makes the horrors hit harder. Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Tommaso Koch El Pais (Spain) More complex, dark, devastating, ambitious. But also, at times, uneven. I’m keeping the faith that the mushroom apocalypse will deliver again. Travis S Horrible writing this season. The actors apparently forgot how to act in between seasons also. Its going to be a no for me dawg. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Emmanuel R I’m done watching after Episode 2. What the hell was that? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Gabriel A Well as always HBO delivers a stunning production . The quality is excellent, but sadly I can’t watch the show anymore . The actress Bele Ramsey in season one was not my fav. I kept watching because her character arch made her more likable . But now in season 2 that Pedro Pascal is dead I guess im good with this as a season ending for me . There is not enough here to keep me interested I hope HBO will make Monster hunter international . The main characters stay in the series for a while and would be a better show to invest time in Oh well, those are my thoughts have a good day Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Audience Member Great adaptation overall. Even as a big fan of the game, I’ve enjoyed pretty much every change they’ve made so far. The one thing I wish they’d kept, though, is the initial aura of mystery around Abby. In the game, not knowing who she was made you hate her first; only later, once you learned her backstory, did you start to empathize with her. That shift in perspective, and the reminder that everyone has their own story, made the ending land even harder. After watching how some so-called “fans” reacted to this second episode, I can see why the showrunners tried to build empathy for Abby right from the start: it’s basically damage control to shield the actress from the kind of abuse the original game’s Abby faced. Still, it’s disappointing to see the same loud, ignorant minority show up again, acting the same way over the same IP after all these years… Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Elizabeth R Predictable gratuitous violence. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Joss A The second season has, so far, been plagued by bad, lazy writing, insufferable characters, and the story choices that are totally baffling. It reminds me of the end seasons of GOT, which is really bad seeing that TLOU is only at the beginning of season 2. I doubt there will be a season 3. Can not recommend.
