The accepted take on this is that the first half is delightful while the second half disappoints, which yeah it is supposed to be disappointing because there were no good choices for the characters. I really don't know what ending people wanted instead. Jackson and Segal are just fantastic, being really funny while selling the tragedy of the ending.

The only false move Glenda Jackson makes is having to act a crying scene while watching "Brief Encounter." Otherwise, her surprise Oscar win is justified, though shocking, having bested heavy dramatic Oscar-nominated performances for 1973.

Probably undeserving of its five Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, and most certainly not for Glenda Jackson's Best Actress win in this whimsically written but intolerably whining featherweight adultery comedy.
