Drew Gregory Autostraddle I just can’t believe this movie came out this year instead of twenty years ago. Sep 30, 2024 Full Review Lisa Kennedy Variety For every inventive or simply satisfying rom-com, there are dozens of clumsy, rote ones — “French Girl” falls among the latter. Mar 14, 2024 Full Review

Ben D Maybe it just feels nice to watch a classic rom-com in 2024 (devoid of the raunchiness of No Hard Feelings) that gave French Girl an unexpected charm. The RT is a huge (26/71), although less than 100 total reviews exist as I write this and the movie doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. Moreover, the title is (sort of) a misnomer — the titular “French Girl” (Evelyne Brochu), isn’t European French, but French-Canadian. I say “sort of” because I’ve heard French-Canadians simply refer to themselves as “French” before, although, the red, white, and blue picture for the movie makes me think the designers knew exactly what they were doing… Nevertheless, the plot is fairly rote and predictable concerning culture/language miscues, ex-lovers, and family tension, but what elevates this movie into the low-70s is it has plenty of legitimately funny moments. Zach Braff as Gordon Kinski is the stereotypical urban American — he rides his bike to his high school English teaching job in Brooklyn. And yes, he dresses up like Shakespeare to teach Shakespeare. Sophie’s (Brochu) ex-lover is the immaculate Ruby (Vanessa Hudgens) (*lesbian twist!*), who is photo-shopped good-looking, extremely successful, talented, and girl-bossy. Ruby holds Sophie’s career in the balance as she may just hire her for a chef position in a restaurant in a literal castle — you know the one, it’s in every photo of Quebec City. Ulterior motives abound. Will soy-boy Gordon’s wit be able to compete with the holistic and formidable excellence of the Sapphic goddess to retain Sophie’s heart?? Tune in to find out. Yes, it’s all very transparent, but it’s fun and light and Antoine Olivier Pilon as Sophie’s brother, Junior, is a welcome collateral character. The scenery is bucolic and majestic. It’s a good movie for what it sets out to be. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review Yuriria M An interesting plot, very funny script, and visually beautiful. I found it authentic and fresh. The casting couldn’t have been done better. It’s a more European humor than American. Quebec looks like one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review
