The Man From Elysian Fields Reviews

What really sneaks up is how involved one gets into these characters and their complicated relationships.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 28, 2008

| Original Score: 10/10 | Oct 7, 2004

It mixes banality with literature and comes up with a pap concoction.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 5, 2003

The tone keeps a marvelous balance between intelligence and pity.

Acting is what sustains the unstable plot lines.

Best of all is Garcia, who perfectly portrays the desperation of a very insecure man.

...a trashy little bit of fluff stuffed with enjoyable performances and a bewildering sense of self-importance

Full Review | Original Score: B- | Dec 28, 2002

Smart and full of sharply drawn characters and wonderfully snappy dialogue.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 28, 2002

A terrifically engaging, provocative movie.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/4 | Dec 27, 2002

The film is hard to dismiss -- moody, thoughtful, and lit by flashes of mordant humor.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 20, 2002

| Original Score: A- | Dec 16, 2002

The film boasts at least a few good ideas and features some decent performances, but the result is disappointing.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Dec 13, 2002

When a movie asks you to feel sorry for Mick Jagger's sex life, it already has one strike against it.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Dec 13, 2002

Hickenlooper seems unsure what he wants his film to be. Is it a mid-life crisis film? Is it a marriage-in-trouble film? Or is it really classy neo-porn lite?

| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 6, 2002

If you can look past the leaps in logic and take it in as a morality tale about the consequences of unprincipled affections, then Elysian Fields can offer its share of blissful moments.

Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Nov 29, 2002

I would have enjoyed Elysian more if the filmmakers had tried to ease off the dramatic fireworks and just let the characters and their dilemmas naturally progress.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Nov 27, 2002

Prancing his way through the tailor-made part of a male hooker approaching the end of his vitality, Jagger obviously relishes every self-mocking moment.
