Russ Breimeier

Russ Breimeier's reviews only count toward the Tomatometer® when published at Tomatometer-approved publication(s).
Biography:

Russ remembers Star Wars as the first movie he ever saw at the age of four(Dad took him out for popcorn during the scary parts). From an early age, his parents encouraged him to read the reviews of critics like Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert to help decide what movie the family would see for the weekend. It's only natural that Russ would grow up a self-proclaimed media junkie and eventually end up reviewing films. Russ' favorites include the sweeping blockbusters of the last 25 years (Indiana Jones, Star Wars), and he also enjoys looking for modern parables and Christian themes within movies. In addition to writing film reviews, Russ is managing editor of , ChristianityToday.com's online music magazine.

Thomas Kinkade's Christmas Cottage (2008) 2.5/4 “Throw out your preconceptions, because the movie's actually not bad. Christmas Cottage has its charm, and certainly isn't the mess many would expect.” – Christianity Today Jun 8, 2020 Full Review Marvel's the Avengers (2012) 91% 4/4 “The Avengers will surely rank among the best superhero movies, if not summer blockbusters, of all time.” – Christianity Today May 10, 2012 Full Review Snowmen (2010) 63% 3.5/4 “Funny, engaging, thought-provoking, meaningful, and one of the best family movies I've seen in a long time.” – Christianity Today Oct 24, 2011 Full Review Dolphin Tale (2011) 81% 2.5/4 “Dolphin Tale has its heart in the right place and tells its story well enough for its core audience. Moralistic and sweet, there's plenty here for kids and parents to enjoy.” – Christianity Today Sep 23, 2011 Full Review Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) 96% 3.5/4 “Back in the first movie, Mr. Ollivander told a young Harry that we should expect great things from him. With the cinematic conclusion ten years later, he's been proven right.” – Christianity Today Sep 2, 2011 Full Review Seven Days in Utopia (2011) 23% 1.5/4 “Even the great Robert Duvall can't save this triple bogey of a movie.” – Christianity Today Sep 2, 2011 Full Review Thor (2011) 77% 3.5/4 “What could have been a stiff and overwrought production turns out to be one of the more well-rounded and enjoyable superhero movies in recent memory.” – Christianity Today May 6, 2011 Full Review Sucker Punch (2011) 22% 2/4 “A sucker punch is a cheap distraction for someone to gain the edge to knock the opponent senseless. That sums this up: What looks good initially will ultimately leave you flat.” – Christianity Today Mar 25, 2011 Full Review The 5th Quarter (2010) 50% 1.5/4 “The 5th Quarter confuses sympathy for empathy. This story deserves better than this amateurish production.” – Christianity Today Mar 25, 2011 Full Review I Am (2010) 38% 3/4 “I Am is less about Shadyac's radical lifestyle change than it is an exploration of humanity's shortcomings and wasted potential for good.” – Christianity Today Mar 25, 2011 Full Review Rango (2011) 88% 3/4 “Some good bits about the nature of heroism, but not enough to elevate Rango to the ranks of Pixar. Still, when viewed as a silly comedy-adventure, it's enjoyable.” – Christianity Today Mar 4, 2011 Full Review Tron: Legacy (2010) 51% 2/4 “For a movie showcasing flashy action, the pacing is pokey, weighed down by dull flashbacks and clichéd discussions about embracing the "digital frontier," blah, blah, blah.” – Christianity Today Dec 17, 2010 Full Review The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010) 49% 2.5/4 “The film is merely okay, and that's disappointing. With such strong source material and the future of the franchise uncertain, this Voyage should have been better.” – Christianity Today Dec 9, 2010 Full Review Red (2010) 72% 3/4 “A fun spin on the spy genre with the seasoned veterans showing up the more inexperienced greenhorns. chances are you'll be seeing RED once the positive word of mouth hits.” – Christianity Today Oct 15, 2010 Full Review The Expendables (2010) 42% 2/4 “It's fun to see this aging cast together on screen, but the movie is junk. The one-liners aren't funny, the dialogue is tedious, and the action itself is prosaic and repetitive.” – Christianity Today Sep 24, 2010 Full Review Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) 37% 2/4 “I miss the days when big-budget movies actually delivered on memorable thrills and characters. Prince of Persia has neither, only a lazy script enhanced by computer-generated visuals.” – Christianity Today Jun 11, 2010 Full Review A Shine of Rainbows (2009) 50% 2.5/4 “A nice, wholesome movie with a positive story about learning to be loved and to love others. Unfortunately, it's also too dull and treacly for most tastes.” – Christianity Today May 7, 2010 Full Review Hubble (2010) 88% 3.5/4 “Hubble 3D doesn't weigh in heavily on theories of Big Bangs, evolution, or creation. Instead, it lets the visual data speak for itself.” – Christianity Today May 7, 2010 Full Review Clash of the Titans (2010) 27% 1.5/4 “The CGI extravaganza can't overcome all the other flaws: sloppy exposition, terrible dialogue, heavy-handed acting, and not a single likable character in the bunch.” – Christianity Today May 7, 2010 Full Review How to Train Your Dragon (2010) 99% 3/4 “A rousing adventure for families, but it's the animation that truly makes the film fly higher than others in the genre.” – Christianity Today Mar 26, 2010 Full Review The Book of Eli (2010) 47% 3/4 “Hollywood has released a mainstream action movie about the Bible. If Eli sparks discussion about faith and the vitality of God's Word, that's cause for acclaim.” – Christianity Today Mar 5, 2010 Full Review Extraordinary Measures (2010) 29% 2/4 “A touching story inspired by true events. A timely subject. Two high-profile actors in Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford. Sadly, it all adds up to an extraordinary bore.” – Christianity Today Mar 5, 2010 Full Review Legion (2010) 20% 0/4 “Legion has the audacity to set itself up for sequels without giving the audience enough compelling reason to care about this first installment.” – Christianity Today Mar 5, 2010 Full Review Planet 51 (2009) 23% 2/4 “It's hard not to compare, but Pixar's classy and imaginative films set the bar high, while movies like this aim too low.” – Christianity Today Nov 30, 2009 Full Review Old Dogs (2009) 5% 0/4 “Why do once great actors attach themselves to a dog of a picture like this? Surely they still have standards? Alas, their judgment seems to be fading . . .” – Christianity Today Nov 30, 2009 Full Review
