Presence (2024) 88% 4/10 “Now available for rent/purchase on Prime Video, Steven Soderbergh's metaphysical mystery conjures up a dysfunctional family that discovers an elusive ghost in their recently acquired suburban home, but much of it makes no sense whatever.” – SSG Syndicate Mar 7, 2025 Full Review Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025) 88% 7/10 “Humor and honesty prevail in the mature, even melancholy script that's the basis for this sweety satisfying screwball romantic comedy streaming on Peacock.” – SSG Syndicate Feb 28, 2025 Full Review The Gorge (2025) 63% 8/10 “A fun 'n' frightening excursion into a chilling genetic mystery - packed with quirky historical twists, screwy sci-fi science and relentless, radioactive action.” – SSG Syndicate Feb 15, 2025 Full Review The Wild Robot (2024) 96% 10/10 “Oscar-nominated for Best Animation, Sound and Original Score, Chris Sanders' tender-hearted, meaningful saga is the best family film of 2024. As for a sequel, it's inevitable since this encompasses only part one of Peter Brown's trilogy of YA novels.” – SSG Syndicate Feb 12, 2025 Full Review Anora (2024) 93% 8/10 “This year's Critics Choice Best Picture winner is a major Oscar contender and - while it may have a similar concept to 'Pretty Woman' - there's one helluva difference.” – SSG Syndicate Feb 8, 2025 Full Review You're Cordially Invited (2025) 48% 4/10 “Due to the Nick Stoller's ludicrous writing/directing and the improbable, unconvincing chemistry between Will Ferrell & Reese Witherspoon, this is one of the world's worst wedding comedies. I'd advise sending regrets.” – SSG Syndicate Feb 5, 2025 Full Review The Room Next Door (2024) 81% 6/10 “In Spain, despite religious opposition, assisted suicide is accepted while - in the U.S. - the right to die is controversial. Euthanasia is legal in only 10 states & Washington, D.C. so Pedro Almodovar's bittersweet film is visually sumptuous & spectral.” – SSG Syndicate Feb 2, 2025 Full Review The Order (2024) 92% 6/10 “What makes this crime thriller timely is that many considered the concept of a neo-Nazi movement with tacit presidential approval just a fantasy until 1/6/2021 - when Capitol rioters waved copies of 'The Turner Diaries' - and Donald Trump was reelected.” – SSG Syndicate Feb 2, 2025 Full Review The Brutalist (2024) 93% 8/10 “Compelling immigrant tale with Oscar nominee Adrien Brody delivering one of the best performances of the year.” – SSG Syndicate Jan 25, 2025 Full Review Lee (2023) 67% 6/10 “Kate Winslet's nuanced performance is arresting and compelling but the episodic narrative is awkward & confusing, glossing over/omitting salient details about Lee's alcoholism, chain-smoking, promiscuous sexuality, insatiable need for excitement, etc.” – SSG Syndicate Jan 19, 2025 Full Review September 5 (2024) 93% 8/10 “Riveting and relevant, this is an enthralling examination of the dynamics of media ethics, achieving astonishing authenticity by interweaving archival news footage. ” – SSG Syndicate Jan 18, 2025 Full Review Emilia Pérez (2024) 72% 8/10 “French filmmaker Jacque Audiard's unique, provocative, compassionate, daring operatic crime drama stars transgender Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascon - delivering a complex dual performance - with support from Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez.” – SSG Syndicate Jan 13, 2025 Full Review The Last Showgirl (2024) 83% 7/10 “With her breathy, vulnerable Marilyn Monroe-like voice, Pamela Anderson seems to relish removing her makeup and courageously showing her age, while Jamie Lee Curtis' instinctive grasp of her character is simply sensational.” – SSG Syndicate Jan 13, 2025 Full Review A Complete Unknown (2024) 82% 7/10 “James Mangold's scruffy, scrappy, sanitized glimpse of Bob Dylan's early rise to fame and fortune: 1961-1965. Timothee Chalamet delivers an amazing performance.” – SSG Syndicate Jan 10, 2025 Full Review Babygirl (2024) 76% 5/10 “While Dutch director/writer Halina Reijin relates this psychodrama from the female perspective, she never delves into why the powerful wife never confessed her repressed desire for submissive role-playing to her husband, a theater director. Frustrating!” – SSG Syndicate Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Juror #2 (2024) 93% 7/10 “ Clint Eastwood's sturdy, serviceable courtroom drama is ambivalent about revealing any more than absolutely necessary about justice and the protagonist's moral dilemma.” – SSG Syndicate Dec 31, 2024 Full Review It Ends With Us (2024) 54% 6/10 “The theme serves as a reminder to domestic abuse victims that there is a way out. But it's questionable whether actor/director/producer Justin Baldoni will helm Colleen Hoover's sequel, "It Starts With Us," which his Wayfarer Films has also optioned.” – SSG Syndicate Dec 29, 2024 Full Review The Six Triple Eight (2024) 55% 7/10 “It's inspirational, compelling and historically significant despite Tyler Perry's pedantic dialogue and shamelessly manipulative direction, leading to the actors' somewhat stiff, stilted performances.” – SSG Syndicate Dec 27, 2024 Full Review Hex (2022) 7/10 “Marielle Heller's perceptively bitter, sardonic and surreal adaptation of Rachel Yoder's feminist fable...” – SSG Syndicate Dec 22, 2024 Full Review A Real Pain (2024) 96% 8/10 “Jesse Eisenberg's perceptive comedic-drama explores various paths to dealing with pain, loss & suffering, accompanied by complex upheaval of self-discovery. Kieran Culkin will snag a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination to accompany his 'Succession' Emmy.” – SSG Syndicate Dec 14, 2024 Full Review Carry-On (2024) 88% 7/10 “With so many of us planning to fly this holiday season, Netflix's explosive, escapist thriller couldn't be timelier....and designating amiable Jason Bateman as the villain is clever casting.” – SSG Syndicate Dec 14, 2024 Full Review Challengers (2024) 88% 8/10 “Luca Guadagnino's psychologically intriguing concept is erotically-charged and enigmatic -- which is what distinguishes it from other sports-themed dramas.” – SSG Syndicate Dec 13, 2024 Full Review Maria (2024) 75% 8/10 “Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain's exaggerated yet elusive and elegiac fantasy....for which Angelina Jolie will undoubtedly receive a Best Actress nomination.” – SSG Syndicate Dec 7, 2024 Full Review Blitz (2024) 81% 7/10 “While Steve McQueen's story structure is episodic and formulaic, he - along with production designer Adam Stockhusen and cinematographer Yorick Le Saux, visually recreate not only London under attack but also the frenzied, integrated nightclub scene.” – SSG Syndicate Dec 3, 2024 Full Review Gladiator II (2024) 70% 8/10 “It's an eye-popping, barbaric, sword-and-sandal, cinematic spectacle, featuring ferocious baboons, a saddled rhino and savage sharks...along with scene-stealing Denzel Washington, who should get a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.” – SSG Syndicate Nov 24, 2024 Full Review
