Kate G This movie is one of my all time favorites. Lila's awkwardness is almost painful to watch and poor Walter is struggling under his accomplished father and sister. These two odd people traipsing about Spain are brought together by basic human decency. Don't we all want someone we can actually talk to? Despite societal norms and a fatal disease they decide to love each other. I can still see them riding burros together in La Mancha. As they say, it's a small movie but a timeless story. A great but quiet love affair develops between the two main characters ( a young Timothy Bottoms and Maggie Smith.) Ir takes place in Spain . Pacula, who also made films like "The Sterile Cuckoo" and "Sophie's Choice". It is quiet, but a little too quiet which borders it on the uninvolving. Timothy Bottoms plays a college age student who takes a bicycle tour through Spain. He meets a Britsih woman, played by Maggie Smith, who is on anothert tour. She is older than him, but they hit it off and they leave their respected vacations to travel together. There is more going on than that, but I don't want to spoil anything. No surprise here is that the performances make the film, the story is not overly captivating.
