The Book of Henry Reviews

Once The Book of Henry entertains the proposition of murder, everything changes and that pendulum begins to look like a scythe cutting wheat.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 16, 2024

I do agree that things could've been handled with a little more subtlety, grace or tact...but even so, the end result was satisfying to me.

The truth is, while I don't think I can quite recommend the film, I appreciated its attempt to try something slightly insane, to take turns that most mainstream movies don't dare.

Watts throws herself into the project, much like a first responder to an emergency.

| Apr 6, 2020

The few pleasures within The Book of Henry come from the ever-present feeling that at any moment something grandly idiotic could occur out of the blue. On this front the film absolutely delivers.

Overall, The Book of Henry is confusing and so poorly executed, that not even its talented cast can save it.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Nov 12, 2019

This is a tear jerker film with good intentions, but there's an awful lot going on, including several messages.

| Sep 18, 2019

Naomi Watts can't save a drama built on a poorly constructed scheme of something a normal thinking adult would have brushed off immediately. If you wanted to badly explain the plot, then it could be summed up as a dead baby scavenger hunt.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 2, 2019

A nonsense piece that does not bother, but that clearly shows the weak capacity of its responsible. [Full Review in Spanish]

THE BOOK OF HENRY has it's heart in the right place and challenges audiences with ideas that may be uncomfortable to talk about, but that is exactly what makes this movie worth seeing.

| Original Score: 7/10 | May 24, 2019

The Book of Henry might have some interesting ideas but the tonal shifts are so frequent and jarring that you're left wondering what kind of movie this is and who it was made for.

| Original Score: 3/10 | May 21, 2019

Hollywood's hottest club is The Book of Henry. This movie has everything: sniper rifles, Jacob Tremblay doing magic, and Naomi Watts playing the mandolin

It's hard to know if a director other than Trevorrow could have made The Book of Henry any better. It's a tall order for anyone to mold this disjointed plot into one cohesive film.

| Original Score: D | Mar 30, 2019

Almost every line of dialogue and character choice felt off and the tone is a complete disaster.

| Original Score: D- | Mar 11, 2019

The Book of Henry functions like one of its protagonist's Rube Goldberg machines. On paper it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, but despite plenty of shaky moments it somehow holds together.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 2, 2019

The Book of Henry is a disjointedly charming movie made with warmth but falls slightly short in its storytelling. It will either infuriate you or suck you in.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Dec 21, 2018

Whatever your expectations are for the unclassifiable The Book of Henry, I guarantee they won't be fully realized.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 20, 2018

A tearjerker with no tears, a thriller with no thrills, and a family film which manipulates and undermines the value of true familial love, The Book of Henry is an atrocity.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Nov 26, 2018

This is one of the best movies I have seen thus far in 2017.

| Nov 12, 2018

This bizarre and horrendously misjudged combination of Spielberg whimsy and harsh thriller is a thoroughly perplexing watch.
