Stage actor with wildly staring eyes and a fascinating whispery voice who made a brilliantly memorable Hollywood debut as the crazed Peter in Josef von Sternberg's unique biopic of Catherine the Great, "The Scarlet Empress" (1934), starring Marlene Dietrich.
