Biography:

James Preston Poole is a Houston-based writer who specializes in genre film, while also screenwriting and working on film sets whenever he can. The Rivals of Amziah King (2025) 97% 5/5 “The Rivals of Amziah King is a perfectly calculated mish-mash of genres that revels in its rich world-building and colorful cast. Matthew McConaughey is stellar, as usual, but newcomer Angelina LookingGlass cements herself as a new star to look out for.” – Discussing Film Mar 28, 2025 Full Review Dead Lover (2025) 76% “Dead Lover is too much, and that’s precisely the point. It’s a bizarre fusion of genres, low-budget goodness, and multi-role-taking performers with a willingness to go off the rails. Let it wash over you rather than try to fight it.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 26, 2025 Full Review Redux Redux (2025) 96% 8.5/10 “Redux Redux (2025) isn’t a flashy film. The McManus Brothers’ latest effort puts strong, simplistic storytelling above the theatrics, allowing for a great piece of meat-and-potatoes science fiction...” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 25, 2025 Full Review On Swift Horses (2024) 53% 3/10 “Daniel Minahan’s film lacks passion. Not exploring sexuality in a fresh or even engaging way, On Swift Horses is a pretty idea of a film rather than a thoughtful examination. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 25, 2025 Full Review Death of a Unicorn (2025) 54% 3.5/5 “Death of a Unicorn is at its best when focusing on old-school "creature feature" horror, and at its worst when recycling forced "eat the rich" humor.” – Discussing Film Mar 21, 2025 Full Review Descendent (2025) 90% 5/10 “Descendent (2025) is the kind of film you want to love. It’s deeply felt, genuine stuff. Telling this story from the lens of science fiction ultimately dulls its effectiveness. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 21, 2025 Full Review The Threesome (2025) 84% “A trio of genuinely gifted actors perfectly conveys a subdued approach and a commendable screenplay, allowing The Threesome to blaze its trail as an independent feature primed for great conversation.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 19, 2025 Full Review The Surfer (2024) 87% “Rich with thematic material and even richer in performances and aesthetic flourishes, Nicolas Cage’s streak of choosing interesting projects that push him as a performer continues.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 18, 2025 Full Review Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie (2025) 100% 10/10 “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie deserves its flowers, without question. Matt Johnson’s latest is a laugh riot that doubles as a “they can’t keep getting away with this” kind of stunt and a testament to independent filmmaking ingenuity.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 12, 2025 Full Review Friendship (2024) 91% 9/10 “Riding a tour-de-force performance from Tim Robinson, Andrew DeYoung’s Friendship is a powerhouse of dark comedy that will have as many audiences too uncomfortable to continue as it will have fans years from now rewatching every scene obsessively.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Hallow Road (2025) 95% 8/10 “Babak Anvari’s single-vehicle, two-actor journey through darkness conjures up a suffocating discomfort that will require deep breaths afterward. Whether this dour ride into the forest goes to a satisfying destination, the ride is more than worth it.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 8, 2025 Full Review Captain America: Brave New World (2025) 48% “Captain America: Brave New World is less interested in reinvigorating the landscape of the comic book film than pulling off what Marvel used to do so effortlessly.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 12, 2025 Full Review Opus (2025) 41% 3.5/5 “Opus feels too similar to other social thrillers like The Menu and Blink Twice at first, but by the end, it delivers a bold take on celebrity culture that is both horrific and original. ” – Discussing Film Feb 4, 2025 Full Review LUZ (2025) 44% 4/10 “The failure to really make something of its concept and obviously talented cast leaves LUZ as disconnected from its audience as those in the virtual world might be from reality.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 3, 2025 Full Review It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley (2025) 100% “To audiences familiar with Jeff Buckley or not, It’s Never Over Jeff Buckley (2025) is a perfect encapsulation of the man and the talent he possessed. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 1, 2025 Full Review The Legend of Ochi (2025) 80% 8/10 “The Legend of Ochi doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor does it have to. It’s precisely what it needs to be — a heartfelt iteration of a classic narrative told in a lovingly handmade fashion.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Jan 30, 2025 Full Review Plainclothes (2025) 79% 5/5 “Plainclothes is a coming out drama that carries the emotional stakes of an extremely tense thriller, giving Tom Blyth the chance to show off his impressive range. It's both stylish in how it conveys its '90s setting and noble in how it avoids tropes.” – Discussing Film Jan 27, 2025 Full Review Juror #2 (2024) 93% 8/10 “Clint Eastwood is a filmmaker whose career has gone through peaks and valleys, but one thing’s for sure: when it comes down to it, he understands the fundamentals of telling a strong story, and Juror #2 shows he has not lapsed in his old age.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Dec 21, 2024 Full Review Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) 85% 3.5/5 “At its best, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an epic adaptation of the classic video game Sonic Adventure 2. At its worst, it's a painfully unfunny comedy that dumbs down the franchise’s humor.” – Discussing Film Dec 18, 2024 Full Review Maria (2024) 75% 8/10 “Maria is an ambitious film. From frame one to its end, however, the movie is nothing less than a gripping, empathetic portrayal of a woman’s last days that, if nothing else, reminds us of the kind of power Angelina Jolie still brings to her work.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Dec 13, 2024 Full Review Kraven the Hunter (2024) 15% 7/10 “Kraven the Hunter isn’t going to be anyone’s favorite comic book movie. What it is, though, is still respectable. You can do much worse than a propulsive action flick with a ridiculous premise and a lot of fun supporting characters.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Dec 11, 2024 Full Review Babygirl (2024) 76% 9/10 “Babygirl is a conversation starter. Halina Reijn forges a dynamic that would make the audience feel guilty to indulge in if it weren’t so inviting. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Dec 5, 2024 Full Review Smile 2 (2024) 86% 4.5/5 “Not just a good horror sequel, but a superior one. Smile 2 is a dual showcase for Parker Finn’s writer-directorial talents and Naomi Scott’s acting abilities that tops the original film and keeps the commentary strong.” – Discussing Film Oct 16, 2024 Full Review Bone Lake (2024) 95% 8/10 “What makes Bone Lake stand on its own in a chaste cinematic climate is a frank discussion of relationships.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Sep 28, 2024 Full Review Apartment 7A (2024) 43% 5/10 “Natalie Erika James showcases her talent enough to prevent Apartment 7A from becoming a slog. Still, outside of Julia Garner’s commitment, there’s nothing fresh under the hood to recommend visiting Apartment 7A.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Sep 23, 2024 Full Review
