Biography:

After receiving an MA studying the anthropology of popular culture, I decided academia wasn't for me. I turned to podcasting to review television, movies, and explain why different facets of popular culture matter. After a year of podcasting, I turned to writing out my reviews and quickly made press lists to review films. Not only to I review films, but I analyze their impact and attempt to see beyond my own genre biases.

Holland (2025) 21% C+ ““Holland” is stronger in parts and weaker as a whole. There is enough to hold onto, but I couldn’t help but think it could have been something greater.” – The Playlist Apr 1, 2025 Full Review A Working Man (2025) 49% 8/10 “A Working Man understands the assignment, and it's better for it. The B-action movie is back in theaters, and that's something to celebrate.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 30, 2025 Full Review Warfare (2025) 93% 7.5/10 “Warfare (2025) is one memory and expertly directed, with excruciatingly impactful sound and emotive performances. Sadly, what’s featured in the credits removes the sentiment and reduces the movie to spectacle. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 28, 2025 Full Review Another Simple Favor (2025) 81% 6/10 “Another Simple Favor struggles to do the most despite coming off as overstuffed at the same time. Still, Anna Kendrick manages to mostly right the ship. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 25, 2025 Full Review Drop (2025) 84% 7/10 “Part romance and all gas pedal, Drop is the kind of movie meant to headline SXSW. And once again, Christopher Landon knows just how to make a narrative gimmick into a genre thrill ride. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 25, 2025 Full Review We Bury the Dead (2024) 88% 8.5/10 “Tense, unique, and unafraid to let silence dominate a scene, We Bury The Dead is nothing like you would expect and everything that makes a zombie story compelling. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 25, 2025 Full Review Slanted (2025) 82% 9/10 “Slanted (2025) uses genre storytelling to capture a lived experience that resonates deeply. Amy Wang's directorial debut is a strong stance on identity and, more importantly, a film that embraces the messiness of it.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 15, 2025 Full Review The Rivals of Amziah King (2025) 97% 10/10 “The Rivals of Amziah King is a phenomenal sophomore film for The Vast of Night director Andrew Patterson. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 15, 2025 Full Review Death of a Unicorn (2025) 54% 6.5/10 “Death of a Unicorn may struggle initially and rely on too much replication, even for an original concept, but it’s still a fun time at the movies. If you walk in for anyone, do so for an effortlessly funny and scene-stealing Will Poulter.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 15, 2025 Full Review I Really Love My Husband (2025) 92% 7.5/10 “I Really Love My Husband is simple and slow. To understand it is to revel in being uncomfortable. It’s about how you can’t run away from a mess, and sometimes you can’t fix things.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 13, 2025 Full Review Clown in a Cornfield (2025) 93% 8/10 “Good young adult horror is always something to be thankful for, and much like the trilogy of books on which it is based, Clown In A Cornfield has the legs to become one that folks get excited about.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 11, 2025 Full Review The Accountant 2 (2025) 78% 8/10 “The Accountant 2 shows that sometimes waiting isn’t bad. Here, it led to a more mature film and one that doesn’t distance itself from the concept that has been raked over the coals.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 10, 2025 Full Review O'Dessa (2025) 38% 7/10 “Decadent and neon, O’Dessa’s original songs are wonderful, to say the least, and something special. The music remains clear even when the film ventures into mind-bending territories with one too many twists.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 10, 2025 Full Review Mickey 17 (2025) 77% 9.5/10 “Sure to top many end-of-year lists, Mickey 17 ultimately gives an inventive and incisive look at just how bad everything is right now and how we can make it better.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 5, 2025 Full Review Queen of the Ring (2024) 73% 7/10 “Queen of the Ring just has to entertain and make people curious about the start of women’s wrestling, and it does that.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 3, 2025 Full Review Long Gone By (2019) 6/10 “Long Gone By is a solid film. It’s emotive and well made with performances that hit. But for me, I can’t pull it out from under the stereotype of desperation leading to crime.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Mar 1, 2025 Full Review The Monkey (2025) 79% “The Monkey is Goosebumps for adults. It’s purely Oz Perkins’ sense of humor that blends wonder and the macabre, but it’s also purely Stephen King in how it captures childhood trauma turning into adult sins.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 18, 2025 Full Review The Gorge (2025) 63% 7.5/10 “With a lot of romance, a little bit of horror, a heavy heaping of action, and a foot on the gas pedal from the second act onward, The Gorge is one to watch.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 16, 2025 Full Review Bunnylovr (2025) 55% “Bunnylovr is a strong showing of tenderness and understanding that, if anything, highlights Katarina Zhu’s ability to paint an immersive portrait of a character. Zhu can make her audience invested, but the payoff needs refining. ” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 3, 2025 Full Review Plainclothes (2025) 79% 8.5/10 “Plainclothes is an emotionally dense watch as Lucas comes into his truth and suffers from the part he’s played in forcibly revealing others.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 3, 2025 Full Review Ricky (2025) 89% 9/10 “Ricky (2025) is necessary viewing. It’s a must-watch because of the impact of the film’s subject matter and the strength of acting and compassion on display.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 3, 2025 Full Review Omaha (2025) 88% 9.5/10 “Omaha is a family portrait you can’t pull your eyes away from. With beautiful and raw performances from the entire cast, this film embraces subtlety with care, using its silence to craft its emotional narrative just as much as its dialogue.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 3, 2025 Full Review If I Had Legs I'd Kick You (2025) 93% “The truth is that I don't know what to do with If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. I do know that I would never recommend it, but I also know that Rose Bryne continues to solidify herself as a true talent in dark comedy, tragedy, and visceral relationships.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Feb 1, 2025 Full Review Selena y Los Dinos (2025) 93% 6/10 “It tells the same story we have seen and heard since her death. Only now, for a few brief minutes in segments of selected footage, Selena feels less like a goddess protected at all costs and a woman who was just trying to reach her dreams.” – But Why Tho? A Geek Community Jan 31, 2025 Full Review The Ballad of Wallis Island (2025) 97% 8.5/10 “The joy and hope in The Ballad of Wallis Island is something we need right now. It is a testament to what comes after, and maybe more importantly, that there is an after. It’s a film that brings people together by pulling people apart.” – But Why Tho?
