Fabiana (2020) “Documentaries always warrant ethical questions about the narrative process, and Laboissière is impressively restrained with her direction.” – Vague Visages Dec 14, 2023 Full Review The Wandering Earth (2019) 70% “Director Frant Gwo shoots these scenes with utter confidence and clarity, as well as something simple that is often forgotten with stories in fantastical worlds: awe.” – Vague Visages Apr 12, 2019 Full Review They Shall Not Grow Old (2018) 99% “They Shall Not Grow Old is such an apt title because the experiences of these soldiers are made entirely immediate, through both technical and narrative care.” – Vague Visages Apr 12, 2019 Full Review First Man (2018) 87% A+ “It's odd for such a film, one of a momentous historical moment, to end up as an artful poem with the spirit of Dylan Thomas.” – MovieMinis Nov 6, 2018 Full Review Justice League (2017) 39% D+ “Justice League, seemingly a continuation of Batman v Superman, a third film in this trilogy, is jarringly hollow in comparison.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Thor: Ragnarok (2017) 93% C “It's tough to hate Thor: Ragnarok, as the film is beautiful to look at and one of the funnier entries in the MCU. But it's more difficult to love it.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Coco (2017) 97% B+ “The intricacies of its culture are deeply felt on a visual, auditory and thematic level.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Dunkirk (2017) 92% A+ “There's a method here more polished than in any of Nolan's previous work.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Darkest Hour (2017) 84% B “Delbonnel's cinematography is particularly striking ... there's a persistent haze that's as equally eerie as it is strangely invigorating.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Good Time (2017) 91% B “Good Time represents a shift for [Pattinson], who turns in his best and most singular performance in this gritty underbelly thriller from the Safdie brothers.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Columbus (2017) 96% A- “The story centers heavily around architecture, and Kogonada and cinematographer Elisha Christian, craft still-frames ... that feel like pieces of architecture themselves.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review The Glass Castle (2017) 52% C+ “The story is about imperfection, in person and in family, so if the film is imperfect, it can be forgiven.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review The Florida Project (2017) 96% A “The film never exploits its characters' lives, but simply understands them and, in turn, portrays them both sensitively and candidly.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Gerald's Game (2017) 91% B- “Despite being set almost entirely in one room, Gerald's Game turns out to be a deeply visual and physical film.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) 91% A- “The Last Jedi breathes urgent purpose into the new trilogy, purpose it had yet to prove.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review The Greatest Showman (2017) 56% C- “The music never really plants itself in viewers' minds as each piece feels overdone and jarringly anachronistic.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review American Made (2017) 85% C+ “Cruise, sporting a Southern accent, is magnetic, a presence with gravity, one that drives the energy of each scene.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Battle of the Sexes (2017) 84% B “Emma Stone and Steve Carell are both absolutely dynamic as King and Riggs.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Hostiles (2017) 71% A- “So much of Hostiles works, and sticks with us long after we've left the theater, because of how quiet and subtle it all is.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Our Souls at Night (2017) 91% B+ “Neustadter and Weber's dialogue is simultaneously a showcase of naturalism and of calculated specificity. Nothing is over-explained or overstated. Nothing seems written.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Death Note (2017) 36% F “[Death Note] shamefully uses Japan and Japanese people at its convenience.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review The Shape of Water (2017) 92% B+ “The visuals are stunning ... but those visuals are even more memorable because of the tone of empathy that del Toro injects into it all.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review The Post (2017) 88% B “The Post wants to make sure viewers confront its themes directly and explicitly rather than allow the subtlety of the progressing narrative to seep into them.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Chappaquiddick (2017) 80% B “[Chappaquiddick] undoubtedly rests on the shoulders of Jason Clarke, and Clarke turns in one of his finest performances.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Molly's Game (2017) 82% B+ “Chastain manages the tricky balancing act of channeling the spark of Sorkin's dialogue while also shaping a character that feels naturally lived in.” – MovieMinis Oct 31, 2018 Full Review
