The Encampments (2025) 94% “At only 80 minutes, The Encampments tells a fascinating, ripped-from-the-headlines story. Its brevity is apt, since the incomplete story is still unfolding, and nobody knows where or how it ends.” – Variety Apr 3, 2025 Full Review Queen of the Ring (2024) 73% “ “Queen of the Ring” is more of a montage of the highlights of Burke’s illustrious life, rather than an entertaining film.” – Variety Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Khartoum (2025) 92% “This is a film that plays with the form itself, using different elements to complete a film that could not be finished in its original location. It functions as both creative work and a healing mechanism for the filmmakers and their protagonists.” – Variety Mar 11, 2025 Full Review How to Build a Library (2025) “"..these offer glimpses into a wider story but never cohere into a full narrative. The focus remains on the charismatic protagonists who have lots of good intentions. But the community they are supposed to be serving never comes to life.”” – Variety Feb 7, 2025 Full Review Dead Lover (2025) 76% ““Dead Lover” revels in its macabre inventions. Shot entirely on a soundstage, it uses practical effects and visual illusion to create its ghostly world. There’s ingenuity in all creative aspects, from makeup to production design to sound and lighting."” – Variety Feb 7, 2025 Full Review Love, Brooklyn (2025) 78% “"A low-key romantic odyssey that simmers with intimate heat while acting as a loving character study of the beloved, always evolving neighborhood."” – Variety Feb 5, 2025 Full Review Life After (2025) 100% “Adding his own personal perspective as a filmmaker living with disability, Davenport weaves an engrossing, moving and most importantly confrontational movie about the right to die and disability justice.” – Variety Jan 28, 2025 Full Review Third Act (2025) 100% “Tadashi Nakamura takes on a lot with “Third Act” since it’s a historical and educational documentary while also being a very personal story. He succeeds.” – Variety Jan 27, 2025 Full Review Speak. (2025) 100% “Relying on conventional methods, “Speak.” is not an especially innovative addition to the documentary field, but it knows exactly how to showcase its protagonists and stir empathy for them.” – Variety Jan 25, 2025 Full Review Feeling Randy (2024) “Lent uses subtle innuendos to arrive at complete clarity about sexuality without being obvious. That’s no easy feat. That he did it while telling a story both moving and funny is something to be admired.” – Variety Dec 28, 2024 Full Review The Last Rifleman (2023) 69% “The filmmakers do not trust the audience to grapple with these plain elements alone, so they add unsophisticated humor... Whatever life Brosnan tries to infuse into the proceedings is undercut by everything that surrounds his performance. ” – Variety Nov 24, 2024 Full Review Soundtrack to a Coup d'État (2024) 97% “It’s an entertaining and instructive documentary that presents a huge canvas on which it masterfully explains a complicated historical moment.” – Variety Oct 30, 2024 Full Review The Problem with People (2024) 72% “While the comedic script... favors stereotypes to specificity, director Chris Cottam keeps the rhythm humming nicely enough for its 100-minute running time for the film to be mildly amusing. ” – Variety Oct 4, 2024 Full Review Men of War (2024) “The film peels off all this bravado to uncover the hollowness inside him and the grave consequences he’s inflicted on his friends and collaborators. ” – Variety Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Sudan, Remember Us (2024) “Concentrating on the youth who were at the front lines, Meddeb manages something even more poignant: a thoughtful and empathetic look at how collective hope can mobilize a whole generation. ” – Variety Sep 12, 2024 Full Review The Wasp (2024) 75% “Morales wisely relies on his two lead actors to bring taut vitality to the proceedings. However, as he keeps putting in many circular scenes that don’t differ much from each other, the intensity of their performances starts to feel inconsistent. ” – Variety Aug 31, 2024 Full Review Know Your Place (2022) “Know Your Place stumbles when trying to encompass too much story and doesn’t always give its smaller characters the level of nuance it affords the leads. Despite that, it remains alluring and does not lose audience investment in its characters. ” – Variety Aug 17, 2024 Full Review Dreams in Nightmares (2024) “The film’s humane writing is amplified by Ludovica Isidori’s glowing camerawork, while Ford’s filmmaking is a step up from their debut “Test Pattern.” The canvas is bigger, the rhythm slower yet more confident. ” – Variety Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Eternal Playground (2024) “Eternal Playground sometimes feels like a fanciful lark untethered from reality, yet the filmmakers in total sync with their actors and Tara-jay Bangalter’s camera find a way to make it feel truthful. ” – Variety Jun 18, 2024 Full Review Firebrand (2023) 58% C “A fitting portrait of a woman the film presents as ahead of her time. ” – AV Club Jun 14, 2024 Full Review Seeking Mavis Beacon (2024) 75% “In pursuing a Don Quixote-like goal, they uncover surprising details along the way about subjects that obsess them. As investigators, they are tenacious and relentless; as filmmakers they are exciting and determined.” – Variety Jun 12, 2024 Full Review Antidote (2024) “While “Antidote” might appear to be a straightforward David vs. Goliath story, in choosing to concentrate on the arduous work of how the truth gets uncovered, the filmmakers end up making a rousing, feature-length call to action. ” – Variety Jun 10, 2024 Full Review Made in Ethiopia (2024) “Despite an imbalance in perspectives, “Made in Ethiopia” ends up presenting a compelling narrative about how Chinese influence in Ethiopia impacts both expats and native people.” – Variety Jun 10, 2024 Full Review The Village Next to Paradise (2024) 100% “In building these characters’ world -- the fanciful, the childish and the realistic alike -- Harawe makes a film that quietly seeps into the audience’s consciousness and lingers.” – Variety May 30, 2024 Full Review Evil Does Not Exist (2023) 91% A “It’s a fable, like a simple game of good versus evil, that unspools with such density of narrative that it takes the breath away.” – AV Club May 2, 2024 Full Review
