Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time (2017) “This simple but intensely confronting documentary offers an unprecedented look at the appalling conditions in Australia's refugee detention centre, and the day-to-day lives of the men our government has imprisoned there.” – Junkee Jul 13, 2017 Full Review Spookers (2017) 88% “The film contrasts the heavy stuff with a healthy dose of deadpan Kiwi humour.” – Junkee Jul 13, 2017 Full Review We Don't Need a Map (2017) 83% “An entertaining gonzo-style doco about the history and meaning of the southern hemisphere's most iconic constellation.” – Junkee Jul 1, 2017 Full Review The Beguiled (2017) 79% “[It's] isn't necessarily Coppola's best film... And yet, with deliciously pulpy sensibilities, a surprisingly wicked sense of humour, and a cast stacked with talented women at the tops of their game, it might just be her most squirmingly entertaining.” – Junkee Jun 30, 2017 Full Review Free Fire (2016) 70% 3.5/5 “Taking the glamour, if not the glee, out of violent big-screen gun battles, Free Fire draws more on slapstick comedies than it does Hollywood shoot 'em ups.” – Concrete Playground May 2, 2017 Full Review xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) 46% 3.5/5 “While it's a stretch to call the film a reaction to a Trump presidency, his ascension makes the film's rebellious spirit and multicultural flavour that much more appealing.” – Concrete Playground Jan 20, 2017 Full Review The Handmaiden (2016) 96% 4.5/5 “A sexy, stylish, surprisingly intelligent thriller that demands to be seen at least twice.” – Concrete Playground Oct 27, 2016 Full Review Demolition (2015) 54% “Demolition unfolds with all the narrative and intellectual nuance of a bulldozer being driven through a house. Which, incidentally, is something else we get to see happen in this terrible, terrible film.” – Junkee Jun 24, 2016 Full Review Maggie's Plan (2015) 86% “With snappy dialogue aplenty, the work of the cast is paramount, and thankfully the whole team knocks it out of the park.” – Junkee Jun 24, 2016 Full Review Down Under (2016) 65% “It's one of the savviest Australian comedies in years. Which isn't to say that it isn't also incredibly stupid, because it most definitely is. And that's the entire point.” – Junkee Jun 23, 2016 Full Review Green Room (2015) 90% 4/5 “Rarely has a film captured the terror of imminent bloodshed with this kind of frenzied, animalistic intensity.” – Concrete Playground May 26, 2016 Full Review The Witch (2015) 91% 3.5/5 “While the film's gnawing brand of terror may not be particularly immediate, its lingering effects are also far less easily dispelled.” – Concrete Playground Mar 26, 2016 Full Review Hail, Caesar! (2016) 86% 4/5 “A mystery, a farce, a treatise on religion and a sly interrogation of cinemas so-called golden age masquerading as the ultimate Hollywood love letter.” – Concrete Playground Mar 4, 2016 Full Review Deadpool (2016) 85% 4/5 “In an era of increasingly reluctant and angst-riddled crusaders, [Deadpool] makes being a superhero look fun.” – Concrete Playground Feb 15, 2016 Full Review Nasty Baby (2015) 68% 4/5 “Timely social satire of the most scathing and cynical kind.” – Concrete Playground Feb 5, 2016 Full Review Room (2015) 93% 4/5 “Despite its grim subject matter, Room never wallows in darkness, but instead stares defiantly into the light.” – Concrete Playground Feb 2, 2016 Full Review The Revenant (2015) 78% 2/5 “Without characters to latch on to, or much in the way of deeper thematic content, the novelty of Inarritu's formal work eventually begins to wear off.” – Concrete Playground Jan 13, 2016 Full Review Taxi (2015) 96% 4.5/5 “Mixes the meta elements of his recent output with the shrewd social commentary of his pre-arrest work, all buoyed by a cheekiness that makes it accessible to audiences beyond the arthouse.” – Concrete Playground Dec 31, 2015 Full Review 99 Homes (2014) 92% 4/5 “It is perhaps the most compelling film yet made about the global economic downturn and the everyday people whose lives it tore apart.” – Concrete Playground Nov 26, 2015 Full Review Love (2015) 42% 4.5/5 “See Love. See it in 3D. For the craft, and for the arguments you'll have with people once it's over.” – Concrete Playground Oct 26, 2015 Full Review Macbeth (2015) 80% 4.5/5 “One of the most cinematic Shakespeare adaptations ever put to screen...as compelling in its moments without dialogue as it is when the characters are speaking.” – Concrete Playground Oct 5, 2015 Full Review Tangerine (2015) 96% 4/5 “A loud, stylish, ultra high-energy romp...both uproariously funny and unexpectedly poignant.” – Concrete Playground Sep 18, 2015 Full Review Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief (2015) 95% 4/5 “If even half of what is alleged in [Going Clear] is true, then it's not just an incredible doco, but a first-rate horror movie as well.” – Concrete Playground Jun 23, 2015 Full Review Inside Out (2015) 98% 4.5/5 “Plenty of Pixar movies have the capacity to make people cry, but Inside Out is about *why* we cry.” – Concrete Playground Jun 20, 2015 Full Review Spy (2015) 95% 3.5/5 “For the most part the humour is fairly broad and sweary...still, as with Feig's previous films, the material is elevated considerably by the performances.” – Concrete Playground May 24, 2015 Full Review
