Taxi Driver (1976) 89% “The viewer has no choice, we are forced to breathe the air, gaze through the pupils, and experience the city by slipping into the shoes of a twisted protagonist, the shoe laces tightly tied by none other than a master of his craft, Scorsese.” – The Cinephile Fix Apr 21, 2025 Full Review Mean Streets (1973) 92% “Mean Streets opens a window to the indoor activities of gangsters. Scorsese uses pool halls, restaurants, bars, and clubs as the backdrop and as with most of his films, the external environment has an internal effect on our protagonist. ” – The Cinephile Fix Mar 10, 2025 Full Review Collateral (2004) 86% “While Heat is Mann’s quintessential Los Angeles film, Collateral is his exploration of the city’s darker side.” – The Cinephile Fix Mar 10, 2025 Full Review Ghost in the Shell (1995) 95% “As the world edges closer to the ideas that it once speculated, these images resurface in my thoughts like fragments of a future that was always meant to find us...“Ghost in the Shell” didn’t predict the future; it dissected it before it arrived...” – RogerEbert.com Feb 26, 2025 Full Review Atlantics (2019) 96% “Like ghosts, her films are traces, fragments of lives, histories, and emotions that refuse to fade into oblivion....operating between the realms of the living and the dead, the past and the present, the material world and the spiritual...” – The Cinephile Fix Feb 19, 2025 Full Review Dahomey (2024) 99% “Diop amplifies cries from the past, compelling us to confront their implications for the present and future. In doing so, she creates a cinema through which the silenced voices of history are finally given the space to speak...” – The Cinephile Fix Jan 28, 2025 Full Review The Conversation (1974) 94% “editing and sound mixing used to perfection” – The Cinephile Fix Jan 18, 2025 Full Review Midsommar (2019) 83% “Part fairytale, part break-up movie, Ari Aster’s twisted cult horror will surely stand the test of time.” – The Cinephile Fix Jan 18, 2025 Full Review Marriage Story (2019) 95% ““Marriage Story” could’ve easily been called “Divorce Story”, but the contradicting title suggests that marriage is a failed institution.” – The Cinephile Fix Jan 18, 2025 Full Review Zero Dark Thirty (2012) 91% “...at the film’s most climatic scene, you’ll forget you’re even watching a movie.” – The Cinephile Fix Dec 9, 2024 Full Review Looper (2012) 93% “I was always a sucker for time-travel movies and the mind-bending paradoxes that materialise from baffling scenarios of crafty science fiction. ” – The Cinephile Fix Dec 9, 2024 Full Review Ondine (2009) 70% “Films like “Ondine” don’t come that often...watch it on a cold and windy night.” – The Cinephile Fix Nov 10, 2024 Full Review Monsters (2010) 74% ““Monsters” has one of the most unexpected endings...Pay close attention to the opening and closing shots, there’s a link between them. When you discover what it is, you’ll be thinking of this unsettling ending for days. ” – The Cinephile Fix Nov 10, 2024 Full Review Three Promises (2023) ““Three Promises” is not simply a highly recommended viewing, it’s an urgent one; especially when it’s not just the mortality of thousands of children that is on line, but the morality of humanity as a whole. ” – The Cinephile Fix Oct 6, 2024 Full Review Bonnie and Clyde (1967) 91% ““Bonnie and Clyde” saved American cinema” – RogerEbert.com Sep 10, 2024 Full Review Kinds of Kindness (2024) 71% “The film delves into the ways individuals navigate between personal autonomy and societal norms or external influence. In true Lanthimos fashion, he pushes these themes to exaggerated, yet darkly humorous, extremes.” – The Cairo Scene Aug 4, 2024 Full Review The Brink of Dreams (2024) “Bergman once beautifully expressed that "when film is not a document, it is a dream." Here, we have a film that beautifully merges both elements.” – The Cairo Scene Jul 23, 2024 Full Review The Village Next to Paradise (2024) 100% “While the cinematography and the performances were impressive, they could not fully compensate for the film's pacing and narrative structure. ” – The Cairo Scene Jul 7, 2024 Full Review The Substance (2024) 89% “I've never seen so many people storm out of a cinema during its final thirty minutes. Even the most ordinary shots become mesmerizing through careful framing and stylized lighting.” – The Cairo Scene Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Megalopolis (2024) 45% “In ‘Megalopolis’, we learn that the architect can manipulate time by making it stop. As I watched the film, I wished I had the ability to skip time, or at least reverse it, so I could avoid witnessing one of cinema’s greatest artists fall short.” – The Cairo Scene May 25, 2024 Full Review Bird (2024) 86% “When ‘Bird’ finally does spread its wings, it soars well above other coming-of-age features.” – The Cairo Scene May 25, 2024 Full Review Angle (2023) 100% “By exposing untold stories of what was happening behind the scenes of Kurt Angle’s most iconic moments, Perry adds a layer of depth to Angle’s remarkable achievements.” – The Cinephile Fix Apr 23, 2024 Full Review The Babadook (2014) 98% “Here’s a horror film that strays away from cheap thrills, and taps into something real; true human fear, grief, anxiety, and depression...the more I thought of The Babadook, the deeper it sank into my psyche. ” – The Cairo Scene Apr 22, 2024 Full Review Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) 91% “...a film that is just as much about the film industry itself, as it is about the pursuit of happiness, and our ridiculously desperate need to be admired, recognized, and respected by people that shouldn’t really matter to us.” – The Cinephile Fix Apr 15, 2024 Full Review
