Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Reviews

Apr 19, 2025

The plot feels rushed and some of the visual effects slip, but this YA adventure at least has a unique set up and has silly fun with Greek mythology.

I learned a little bit about Greek Mythology watching this with my daughter. CGI overkill but overall, not too bad.

After reading the book, which I've got the full collection since I saw the series last year, I decided to give this movie a second watch. I first saw this on 온라인카지노추천 back around 2010 or 2011. Knowing how that time had been, it's more or less capitalizing on the success of movies like the Harry Potter series. Since seeing the series, I'd often found the series better due to how it's paced according to the book. This one is honestly half of what I'd call lost in translation. I don't mind movies based on books not always being 1:1, but only if they're done right. This movie is a mixed bag. Just a heads up, this review will have some spoilers. You've been warned. There are some positives that I have here. Like the Lotus Hotel, as it brings into symbolism involving the lotus flowers. Giving into temptation and addiction after consuming the lotus flowers. To lose track on time or quest and Percy and the group had been through after consumption. I did love the aesthetic of both the Underworld that Hades rules as well as Olympus itself. Even with transportation on how to get there. Sure, as part of the effects makes them silly, it's nice that the gods themselves appear larger than the humans alone. Humans are technically ants to the gods. I love the final fight between Percy and Luke despite making Luke become a generic villain comparing between this and the book. Some of the other fights are in the middle, but at the least, they do work as demigods in Camp Half-Blood were taught to fight. And lastly, I do like Grover's character. Not only as a protector for sticking beside Percy, but also as he hides satyr legs with crutches are clever. Now, for this being a mixed bag, there are a few things that I'm mixed on. The effects are one of them. Some of them, like Medusa having to stone or her head being used to stone anything, are clever, including against the hydra. The use of the elements like the water that was used to heal and wielded by Percy Jackson, fire with souls, the master bolt itself, and the Underworld itself being the other side of Hollywood itself. Clever on Hollywood, if you ask me. The mythical creatures are quite a hit-or-miss by design. I liked the Minotaur and Medusa. Not so much on the hellhounds and the hydra, though. Not terrible. Just a good attempt to bring them to life. The next mixed bags I would have to give are the characters. Now, the actors do play well with their given roles, yet the script isn't really the best. Some of the dialogue being used here is more on the miss than a hit, if you ask me. Percy, played by Logan Lerman, does as good as Percy when it comes to having ADHD and dyslexia as Percy himself has. He had some good moments, especially when using water to his advantage since he is the son of Poseidon. Grover, as clever as they portrayed him, and played good by Brandon T. Jackson. Unfortunately, the script is a little all over. Alexandra Daddario, as Annabeth did okay, especially when putting up a fight a couple of times. Yet not too much as the film goes on. Everyone else with their performance did fine. It's just not the best script as the pacing of the film felt rushed at some point like this movie is a point A to point B type of quest. I even have to say a couple of these characters do feel one-noted. But I digress. Now my most criticism goes from no Oracle, which is important to give Percy his quest. No Ares, who is vital to the book, and thankful that the 온라인카지노추천 series did justice for him. Kronos was only mentioned once or twice as him visiting Percy in his dreams, along with Areas and Luke being vital to the build-up as the series goes. Coming from someone who has seen the series before reading the book and now seeing this film again after finishing it, I had put a degree on the pros and cons for a valid reason. Hence, this is where I stand on my civil minded criticism. Again, this film is a mixed bag. Not the worst, but not the best either. If I were to choose, I'd watch the 온라인카지노추천 series again, despite having some flaws of its own yet an improvement compared to the movie. Or just read the book again. I'm gonna give this one five and a half Percy and the gang being in a trance after consuming lotus flowers out of ten. 5.5/10.

As a fan of Riordans Percy Jackson series, I was a bit disappointed by this film, it didn’t perfectly capture the books view, contrasted towards the books, its not on my must see list

Watching this in middle school was something I’ll never forget, but my teacher actually allowed us to watch this PG movie was unreal.

I am a huge fan of the books and even though this movie had its differences to the book, I still think as a movie it is not bad. I actually much prefer it to the new series.

Utterly disastrous adaptation

Nothing like the books

Mar 22, 2025

yes its nothing like the book and pales in comparison. however, i liked this movie so much it drove me to read the books in the first place. i watched this movie multiple times as a kid and even though it differs a lot from the source material, it was a fun watch

I’m sorry this movie is awful. Comparing it to the original book is just not possible it breaks the rules of the original book the casting choices aren’t great. Just read the original book and you’ll love that.

the film had been suggested as Wizarding World with Greek mythology.

It's ok. It defintely has that Chris Columbus feel to it at times also for better or worse. This also can get suprisngly gory and dark at times too for a PG-13 type film from this era. The music isn't bad. It's got a whimsical Spielberg type feel to it but it's also a bit forgettable as well at times. It's better in some parts. Everything else though is just ok. It's a bit of a mess at times. The acting is the most consistent problem here. It's just alright. Percy is just very forgettable despite going on the heroes journey. The comedic relief is very hit or miss. And the love interest just feels hammed in and is just along for the ride. The cinematography at times is cool and other times just doesn't fit. The biggest problem here is that the greek/fantasy like settings don't really work with the real world locations. It just looks like 2 different movies at times and really doesn't work together. This has a ton of CGI and the action is a bit over the top especially in the end. It's loud and obnoxious. The CGI is just alright. This needed more tangible effects to make these 2 worlds work better. Than character devlopment wise it feels like that stuff is just missing and we get the bare minimum. The story makes perfect sense. It's standard heroes journey stuff but the heart and character is absent. We just get introduced to all these characters with no real backstory. Percy is a loser and dyslexic....and nothing else. The comedic relief is just the comedic relief. We never see him really bond with his mother or any real world building with the God's fantasy realm. Also, the God's are just ok....I don't believe really for a second any of them are Gods and feel miscast. They really needed someone like Chris Hemsworth for this. And than when they arrive in the underworld it just feels like crazy stuff just happens with no real obvious clues looking back. The development we do get it more just gags than anything of substance to on the road. And again having these greek gods in real modern locations feels almost like a comedy visually but it's done serious. It's very odd but ok enough I guess at best. Skip This though. There are way better Heroes journey films and way better works from this director.

This film is a very innacurrate representation of the books it was modelled after and failed to be as well made as the books were.

Read the books. The movies all suck. The books are good. The author of the original books himself physically cringed at the scripts and refuses to watch the movies.

I think in my opinion this was HORRIBLE. I read the book first and the movie was TOTALLY different from the book. The fights were rushed ,and he wasn't even supposed to fight Luke ,he was supposed to fight Ares. The fights and camp scenes were different. The plot was way too rushed. I mean I understand movies have a budget but that doesn't mean they change the whole plot. I advise and love watching the Disney+ series. Thank you for reading!💖

I know this is a very different opinion to most people here, but I love this movie because it's just fun. It's not a good novel adaptation is the slightest, but separating that from the movie and you'll have so much fun. Don't take the movie too seriously, think of it as a Disney movie but just a bit more mature than the average disney movies.

Don't watch this, watch the series instead

Great movie! This is what got me into Greek Gods. I can rewatch this movie many times and never get sick of it. Great character choices, especially Logan Lerman, who is awesome as Percy loves me some Grover. I want a Grover. I was worried about the mom the whole damn movie I love the battle part and the discover of his powers was so badass. This movie is so badass great introduction to everything hated the parents but grew to enjoy and like them a lot.

The plot was messy, the characters were cheesey and boring. Especially grover. It was pretty well quality in effect wise. Another thing Is, isn't percy 12?! He looks likes hes almost in his 20s. Poor character build up if I could even call it that. The Medusa fight was quick and predictable, also pretty lame and unexciting. Anabeth looks like she's in her 20s. Percy was kinda being a simp. It just was NOT good. The fight scenes felt rushed, and honestly grovers character was NOT good. He's annoying, cheesy, confident, unlike in the book he's shy and unconfident. And more quiet. Also the lotus hotel... it was rushed and felt like filler. The fight with Mrs. Dodds was OK.. Also it got sexualized pretty quickly, over and over showing more revealing clothes with women. Yeah, I would recommend not watching, the entire thing was very rushed. There wasn't a fight scene barley more than 4 minutes. Awful and disappointing. Just mentioning again, the character development is awful. AWFUL. So expect to be dissatisfied with the build up. Action happens to fast, barley any explanation on why it happened.
