Critics Consensus

While Alien was a marvel of slow-building, atmospheric tension, Aliens packs a much more visceral punch, and features a typically strong performance from Sigourney Weaver.

Scott Cain Atlanta Journal-Constitution Let's not mince words: Aliens is the greatest horror movie since Frankenstein. Here is a rare instance in which a sequel is infinitely superior to the original. Alien, the 1979 thriller, now seems like a preliminary sketch. Jul 30, 2024 Full Review Mike McGrady Newsday Cameron is a master of machinery and weaponry, a technical wizard who replaces Scott's refinement with his own kind of muscularity... But with either film, you leave the theater drained, physically exhausted, well-rewarded for all your suffering. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 30, 2024 Full Review Jay Maeder New York Daily News The long-awaited sequel to Alien proves to be an extraordinary treat, as perfectly realized a thrill-a-second screamer as has ever come along. Rated: 4/4 Jul 30, 2024 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast From the small character details to the massive set-pieces, Cameron expands the Alien mythology and switches sub genres seamlessly. It truly is a perfect sequel. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 16, 2024 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania [James Cameron] takes the franchise in another direction by raising the stakes and turning the sequel into an action-packed, war epic [while] retaining the dread-inducing feel and tone of the first movie. Rated: 5/5 Aug 15, 2024 Full Review Lou Lumenick Bergen Record (New Jersey) What can I say? Aliens is the scariest and most exciting movie I've seen in several years. My adrenalin was still racing an hour later. It's involving. It has well-drawn characters. It has consistency. And Sigourney Weaver gives a dazzling performance. M B Best of the best sci fi horror action movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Thomas G Sigourney Weaver delivers an amazing performance in a brilliantly paced, tense thriller. A must see film for all fans of scifi Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Josh A This film isn't as good as the original, but it's still great and I can see why some find it better. It's a film that, instead of going for more of the same, went for bigger and bolder. It went for spectacle, essentially. And I think it did it well. Nothing better to do than to get right into it, I guess. This is pretty much a natural evolution of Alien's story. Ripley goes into stasis, so what happens when she wakes up? This happens. They could go anywhere with it, as she could wake up anywhere, so they made her wake up in an action movie where marines go to LV426 to save people. It's interesting and well done, as it's entertaining. And the Queen Xenomorph felt natural as a villain, and I liked her. Speaking of, this movie really lives up to its title. There are multiple aliens this time, and it ramps up the stakes. It also leads to a great scene with a room full of alien eggs, where the Queen Xenomorph is. There's also the idea that there's more Xenomorphs than you'd think, and maybe there's more for future sequels. There is. That's why Alien 3 exists. Also Newt was cool, and it had a nice hopeful ending that I liked. Even if Alien 3 kinda changes how you see it, its still a great ending to the story. Overall, a great sequel to Alien with a lot of great action sequences. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Nick M In my opinion the weakest of all of the Alien franchise, no substance purely aesthetic offering in typical Cameron fashion, bigger does not equal better. The very poorly trained special forces commandos I find irritating throughout which is a shame because Lars Henrikson is an awesome Android character. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Steven D I'll cut right to the chase. Buckle up! Because this is the best most action packed action sci-fi horror film ever made. The best practical special effects of all time. This is one of the best movies ever made. Hands down! It takes its predecessor and turns it up 100 notches. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Nikita E A cliche loaded disgrace to the first movie in my opinnion. Stupid Hollywood Action-Movie with screaming kids, instead of a grandios Sci-Fi/Horror Movie that invented a whole new genre. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
