Chocolate Reviews
Great TKD kick and stunts
Favorite martial art flick. Heartwarming and the lead does her own stunts
Fantastic storyline and fight choreography.
The fight scenes and the stunts were decent and shot in a good way. That's everything good the movie had to offer. Everything else is terrible, starting from the cinematography, which looks like something out of a telenovela, the same goes for the dialogues. The actors are as bad as you can find them (except in the fights where they act at least decently). The plot is botched, almost non-existent. Overall, I wouldn't suggest the film even to anyone who just wants martial arts. Save yourself 110'.

The movie is not only a fantastic display of great martial arts action sequences but it has the most realistic showing of Autism I've seen and does it so much better in Hollywood productions
Chocolate is a cheesy, dumb throwback to '90s straight-to-video action flicks. The fighting looks real enough (there's a blooper reel at the end showing all the times people actually got hurt), and the locations and choreography of the fight scenes were especially inventive--this is the first time I've seen a fight in an ice-packing plant or slaughter house, and the locations are used as more than backdrops, they are integrated into the fights--which elevates Chocolate above other movies in its genre and helps one forgive parts of the schmaltzy story.
The plot was sketchy, but strong characters, great martial arts fighting and just having a young girl as the protagonist made this movie REALLY FUN!
The fight choreography was decent. Now with that out of the way, let me go over everything I didn't enjoy about this movie. Everything of dramatic significance is shown as what can best be described as a montage sequence. These moments are never given time to linger and really affect the audience. Relationships flare and fade in a matter of minutes of screentime. I'll use the mom and her Japanese lover, for example. They're from rival gangs. It's the classic star-crossed lovers trope. But we're never given a reason to care about their relationship, other than it's forbidden. So much of the drama that follows hinges on this moment, and yet it fails to resonate. Did I mention that we're never given reason care about any of the characters? Yeah, none of them have any personality outside of some quirks. The heroine is autistic, which in fictionland means she has super copying powers. That's not a personality. Her best friend just kind of exists. There's no meeting. We don't know why they're friends, since that would require some actual writing, though I expect if that was shown it would just be a montage shot. The mom has cancer. That's pretty much all I could tell you about any of the key cast. There's no narrative flow here. We find out a bunch of skeevy dudes owe the mom money, which autistic girl could use to pay for medication. This isn't foreshadowed at all, the only hint at why is that the mom used to run with the gang. The movie, of course, doesn't care about such trivialities. Right at the end, there's a fight, and the dad shows up for no reason other than deus ex machina. The mom dies, making the whole exercise of retrieving money pointless. Once everything wraps up, the dad decides to enter the main girl's life, even though she this is the first time she's ever seen the man. Another thing I didn't enjoy was the music. Great filmmakers understand the importance a soundtrack can have on a movie. Here, it seems like the score was little more than an afterthought. Maybe the budget didn't allow for a decent composer. At least find some decent public domain music. The film not only sounds cheap, but looks cheap, too. The cinematography, the way characters moved and acted, it all felt like a soap opera with fight scenes. I expect those fight scenes are the reason why anybody would like this movie. But then they'd also have not seen many martial arts films to find anything especially brilliant in the fight choreography. I hear praise for the main heroine for being badass, but in an industry full of badasses, she doesn't stand out thanks to her lack of personality. It's funny. I had a friend who insisted that I watch this. This guy would complain how many Hollywood would skimp on details to get to the action, that such films lacked narrative cohesion. Chocolate, for me, ended up being a movie that violated that principle that was so important to him, I expect there must be some rose colored perception on his part. I hope that people realize action and martial arts films don't have to all just be fight scenes.
For a martial arts movie, this takes a few chances: the hero is an autistic early-teen girl who has a difficult time with loud sounds (such as buzzing flies) but yet can pick up difficult physical movements just by watching them. She becomes a force of vengeance against lowlifes who owe her mother money now that she is battling cancer and needs lots of it. Better than it sounds, and very good.
This movie is a foreign martial arts film about a autistic girl that learns Muay Thai. That just about caught my eye since I'm autistic too, well I have Asbergers syndrome but that's close. The movie begins with this stand off where a guy and a girl meet, they get together and she leaves the guy to protect him. The girl then has a daughter Zen which is autistic and when she and her mother are at home. Some people come to rough her up for leaving them and they cut of her mothers big toe. Zen then starts to lean Muay Thai thought some people training and thought some martial arts movies. While preforming somewhere under a bridge Zen gets into a fight with some punks and wins. Then Zen's mother goes for some operation while Zen goes over some moves on video. Her cousin also finds out her mother is in a lot of debt though some book. Zen, after a meltdown cuts her hair as protest and then when sleeping has a trippy dream sequence. Then she and her cousin go to find the people who owe her mom money. They refuse but she ends up using Muay Thai to beat them up and get the money from them. I felt an instant connection with Zen since I'm autistic and the girl who play her is amazing. What's also amazing is that she doesn't seem to kill any of the people who owe her mom money. There's also this scene where there's a butcher shop and Zen gets scared of all the files but her cousin comes to help her. Then her mothers people or debt collectors find out where she is and try to find her. They capture her cousin and her father comes to I think Thailand to help Zen and her mother. After beating up some thugs, Zen encounters another ace with autism. The ending is pretty action packed and a little sad too but this movie made me what to learn about Thailand at the library. Maybe even learn Muay Thai if I can since I heard it can help people with autism focus and defend themselves.
A very well made Thai film with a humane story added with a very well choreograph martial arts stunts. If you combine an old Jackie Chan trademark and a compelling Asian drama, you got Chocolate. Some of the scenes are very predictable in a sense that you know how the plot is executed. It doesn't matter though, I'm having fun all the way with all those crazy fights and it satisfied me enough. Amazing stunts, and by the way Yanin is a bad ass.

Not what I expected at first, but ramps up nicely to what I was looking for. A girl kicking ass. to bad that's all that happen for 2 acts, and the 1st act was long and kind of incoherent. The action is pretty darn good, despite the fact that you can tell Yanin is anticipating some of the kicks and punches.
