Faced with deportation to her native Canada, high-powered book editor Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) says she's engaged to marry Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), her hapless assistant. For whatever reason, "The Proposal" seems to be the romantic comedy that has been talked about more than any other in my circles for years. I finally decided to give it a watch and I think it is charming and funny enough. I do think it is very safe and formulaic but Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock work well together in it. The movie features laughs, romance, and even some genuine sweetness that make it easy to like. I do feel there are definitely better romantic comedies out there, but this one is still a decent one. Overall, I enjoyed it enough and can see why it is a guilty pleasure for so many, and even though it is not really anything super original or unique, it's easy to fall for its simple charms.
