War heroes Rip Murdock (Humphrey Bogart) and Johnny Drake (William Prince) are sent to Washington, D.C., by train, but are not told why. During the trip, they learn they're about to receive top honors for their service. Johnny, seemingly terrified by the publicity that awaits him, jumps off the train and later turns up dead. Suspecting foul play, Rip begins digging into his pal's past. He encounters cover-ups, threats to his own life and deadly femme fatale Coral Chandler (Lizabeth Scott).

The biggest surprise in this movie was Lizabeth Scott. While Bogart is better known for movies with Ingrid Bergman as his leading lady, Scott might be the best leading lady he ever had. If you want to understand why Bogart was a Hollywood legend, this movie is a good place to start before you hit his all-time classics.

The first hour of this film noir is really well done, with moody cinematography, hard boiled characters, and lots of intrigue. The last 30 minutes, once Rip’s relationship with Dusty takes center stage, is less engaging. Still, a strong example of the genre at its 1940s peak, even if it doesn’t quite live up to the potential.

I enjoyed it. Bogart very good and as typically hardboiled as you would want him to be but I thought the female lead was a bit limp. Couldn’t see why bogart fell for her after the song she sang. Maybe they test screened it and that was the reason for her comeuppance at the end.

This is a proper noir film with some great hardboiled one-liners from Humphrey Bogart. The story is reasonably okay. Can Humphrey trust the femme fatal? what happened to his friend? It keeps you watching until the end. Probably the weakest element is Lizbeth Scott who seems rather wooden throughout.

This 1947 film gives us a chance to see one of the iconic actors of the 20th century, Morris Carnovsky, as Martinelli, ruthless gambling tycoon whose sadistic bodyguard, Krause, is played by Marvin Miller, instantly recognizable a decade later as Michael Anthony, loyal assistant to John Beresford Tipton in the classic 온라인카지노추천 series The Millionaire. Overall, the film is a solid Bogart noir, and who's gonna argue with that?
