Manhunter Reviews

Apr 15, 2025

One of the best adaptions and crime movies ever made. Endless style with incredible casting and acting. Michael Manns masterpiece!

A great detective movie that really hums for the most part. A nice prequel to Silence of the Lambs, which took advantage of the basic structure and expanded on it perfectly - mainly by having more Lecktor and less romance plot for the serial killer.

This film is genuinely awful. It’s honestly amusing whenever I hear people say this film was a better adaptation of the novel (Red Dragon) compared to the 2002 movie. Manhunter (I’ll call it Poophunter from now on cuz this film is awful.) attempts to adapt the Thomas Harris novel ‘Red Dragon’. However, due to the fact that Micheal Mann doesn’t know how to make horror, this film becomes a sloppy mess. The only things Poophunter gets right is Francis Dolarhyde’s physical appearance from the novel, and the way Will Graham acts in the movie is somewhat faithful to the novel. However, those are not enough to save the film. The rest of the film is barely faithful to the novel, making it another generic thriller movie. Overall Poophunter has to be one of the WORST movies I’ve ever watched, that aren’t trying to be so bad it’s good. Poophunter is the worst movie ever.

Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, o filme meio que tem algumas de ação, mas não são interessantes e o filme poderia ser bem melhor.

Other than a bit of overacting and some cringe 80s synthetic music, this is a decent cop drama. And the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida cut in the end makes up for all the shortcomings.

Thought that it was pretty well done. Most of the acting is good. I would actually like to see what Michael Man would do with this now. You can tell that he is trying to flesh out his directing style in this movie, but doesn’t quite get it. Definitely William Anderson’s best role.

Squanders the iconic characters of its setting in a synth-laden, deadpan, Miami Vice-esque soup. Hannibal, the monster on which all this drama is supposed to turn, is utterly wasted and sidelined. Of all the adaptations of the Hannibal Lecter novels, this is surely one of the weakest.

This film is in my opinion: one of the best suspenseful horror movies of the 1980s. The film is nearly flawless except for maybe one little nitpick I have: that being the ending fight scene, I think it is cool but I wish they made the fight sequence much longer and more impactful. But outside of the ok ending fight scene, this film is great! Defiently watch this movie if you get the chance, it surely will not disappoint!

When I was a freshman in college, I rented this on videocassette in 1990 which was a year before Silence of the Lambs released and I really loved it. The soundtrack is awesome especially Red 7's 'Heartbeat' and the finale showdown with Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" playing in the background was just electric. I remember buying their Iron Butterfly's greatest hits on cassette after seeing this movie. William Petersen and Dennis Farina were awesome as was Brian Cox as Lector. Not as great as Anthony Hopkins' take on Lecter. But it will always be one of my favorites.

Gripping and gory, “Manhunter” is a meticulously crafted character study, enriched by Brian Cox’s chillingly magnetic portrayal of Hannibal Lecter.

Truly outstanding psychological thriller is really disturbing, suspenseful and really fantastic cast including for the first time we get to meet young Hannibal Lecter helping Will to find the tooth fairy aka Red Dragon and Tom Noonan performance is really creepy and disturbing and emotional villain and he did really great work and Michael Mann did excellent directing and writing and it really felt like watching a true crime documentary on YouTube and streaming platforms.

One of the best crime/serial killer movies of all time. All the characters have purpose and there is never a lull in the cadence of the story. The look and feel, combined with the shots, editing and the direction of Michael Mann make it one of my personal favorites of any movie genre. I've read that some critics felt the music somehow took away from the movie, which is something I don't understand, because it compliments the look and feel of the movie so well. William Petersen, playing Will Graham is awesome to watch as his character sinks his teeth deeper and deeper into the investigation, while still having a mercurial edge to him. This is the original introduction of the Hannibal Lecter character and some might feel that Manhunter is overshadowed by Silence of the Lambs (which is a great movie in its own right), but Brian Cox's interpretation of Lecter is great to watch as well. Tom Noonan as the killer also strikes such a great balance between a reserved, shy and obviously troubled person while harboring the monster he has inside of him. Finally, the details of how the FBI run their investigation really is the cherry on top. It almost feels like you're sometimes watching a documentary due to how well details and nuances of how an investigation are presented. This movie is approaching 40 years old and some of the obvious tech is dated, but you hardly even notice. If you haven't seen the movie, I will add that you should stay away from the trailer... which is very 80's and doesn't fit with the caliber of film. :-)

Uma pena esse filme ser um tanto esquecido, mas as performances aqui e a tensão criada fazem dele um achado na filmografia do Michael Mann.

🍅 9.6/10 Lecktor “would you like to leave me your home number” Will “no “ The cinematography and score are incredible some lingering shops With the music soaring are just beautiful this is what I live for in movies this is art, and it’s still able to give an interesting and engaging story that is thrilling and even a bit intense even scary at points. Manhunter is yet probably one of the best detective movies out there. Grade A+

A must-see for anyone fascinated by the universe created by Thomas Harris and his infamous character, Hannibal Lecter (played here by Brian Cox). Directed by Michael Mann (Miami Vice, Heat) with excellent performances by William Petersen (Graham), Dennis Farina (Crawford), and Tom Noonan (Dollarhyde). If you enjoyed the re-make Red Dragon (2002) then you'll appreciate the contrast found between how the two films are told, directed, and acted. Best scene: Dollarhyde busting through the glass window to Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Fans of Michael Mann will appreciate what he does here. 3.5 stars.

It's just you and me now, sport… Manhunter is a 1986 American thriller film directed and written by Michael Mann 🐉 It’s good 🙂 Worth a watch. I’d recommend it if you like this genre 👍🏼 I enjoyed the first half of this movie, but it lost its way during the second half, and the final scene happened far too quickly… FBI Agent Will Graham, who retired after catching Hannibal Lecter, returns to duty to engage in a risky cat-and-mouse game with Lecter to capture a new killer.

While "Manhunter" nearly is 40 years old, it is always amazing to note how modern and slick Mann's direction feels like. Too bad he seems so keen on heroic figures so ridiculously enamored with their sacrificial self.

Not as good as the later Hannibal film series. The detective is barely plausible here. A lot of over acting. Elements work but mostly it’s a bit silly and heavily 80s but in a bad way. Watched on SKY cinema.
