Critics Consensus

The blood pours freely in Argento's classic Suspiria, a giallo horror as grandiose and glossy as it is gory.

Alyx Vesey Bitch Media What makes [Suspiria] especially effective is how they use horror to make a point about educational institutions' enforcement of gender hegemony to interrogate conventional femininity. Jan 7, 2021 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer What lingers is not a sense of evil but exhilaration in how far Argento and his fellow filmmakers were willing to go to shock and delight; the movie's sheer exuberance is the cinematic equivalent of a blood transfusion. Jaqueline V I decided to watch Suspiria because it honestly piqued my interest even though I’m a person who doesn’t really enjoy watching scary movies. In brief summary this is about Suzy who is an American dancer who gets accepted to a German dance studio but it turns out it's mostly run by a bunch of witches. I think it was a pretty good movie the way they developed the scenes and the bold color lighting they chose to do. I think that the soundtrack and effects used gave it that spooky feeling even if they were recorded after they had filmed the movie.Superia definitely gave me that same feeling as if you were to walk into an old creepy abandoned house. This film wasn’t too scary for me and I will give it a try to watch the 2018 remake. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Aldo T The movie Suspiria is a horror movie that takes place in germany. The movie begins with an American ballet student who moved to Germany to attend a dance academy. Once she arrives the vibes seem to be off and weird events start to unfold. She believes the school is haunted and begins to explore the school as well as investigate what is going on in that place. Suzy discovers a body under the school hidden for years. The movie is rather confusing and a bit unorganized, for me at least. This would be catered to someone who likes to explore the meaning of a movie and uncover plot twists at the end. People did enjoy this movie very much however as it had a remake. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Brynne M Personally I didn't find Suspiria as interesting, hearing a lot about how good this film was, I came into it ready to experience something shocking. Although upon watching, I didn't really feel much from the film, the plot was decent, although I did find ending to be a decent twist. Visually the film was good, I loved the usage of blood and red light to highlight certain scenes. There were some scenes in particular using the red light that I thought were striking and really added some variety in the shots. And as a person that doesn't really like scary movies, I found that it wasn't too scary, and yet I think because of that it wasn't as appealing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Joshua H Suspiria (1977), directed by Dario Argento, was a huge disappointment for me. I had heard a lot of hype about it being a horror classic, but after watching it, I just didn’t get it. The plot was all over the place and hard to follow, and I found myself lost throughout most of the movie. The acting felt stiff and over-the-top, which made it hard to take seriously. The soundtrack, while very intense, was also way too much at times, making the film feel more like a chaotic noise fest than an eerie atmosphere. The visuals were definitely unique, with all the bright colors and strange set designs, but they felt more like style over substance. I get that it’s supposed to be a psychological thriller, but it didn’t build tension for me at all. Instead, it felt confusing and drawn out. Overall, I didn’t find it scary or entertaining, and it just didn’t live up to its reputation. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Esteban M Suspiria feels like you're watching a nightmare made with neon paint. There were definitely times throughout this film I wasn't fully sure what was happening, and honestly, that was part of the journey. The feelings you get from watching it, rather than what actually happens, are what matters: uncomfortable boarding school, strange noises behind walls, and visuals washed in unbelievable colors. The psychedelic music by Goblin is absolutely insane (in a good way) which makes each scene felt that much more intense. This is not your typical horror film with cheap scares or logically intuitive story elements, but views it will creep under your skin in such a unique way as to what you would debate is the combination between arresting visual beauty and terror. Super artsy, super weird, and absolutely unforgettable. If you like call to action horror based more on 'feeling' than thought, this is a big recommend. Just don't watch it alone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Carlos C Suspiria is a strange and creepy horror movie that stands out because of how it looks and sounds. The colors are very bright and the music is loud and scary, which makes the whole movie feel uncomfortable in a good way. It’s about a young woman who goes to a dance school in Germany and slowly realizes that something is very wrong there. The story is a bit confusing at times, and not everything is explained, but that actually makes it more scary. The acting is good, and the movie keeps you guessing about what will happen next. I wouldn’t say it’s a normal horror film, it’s more about mood and style than jump scares. If you like horror movies that feel different and a little weird, Suspiria is a good movie to watch.
