The Warriors Reviews

Apr 24, 2025

Very much of its time, but with an edginess that set it apart from its contemporaries, Walter Hill’s ‘The Warriors’ still remains a somewhat uncompromising view of gang life through a lens, and it’s this bleakness that permeates the narrative in a way many mainstream films fail to. Shot primarily during the twilight hours, the cinematography belies its budgetary restraints, and with a tasty soundtrack to keep things moving, there’s no surprise that it became the cult favourite it is today. While the premise turns upon violence and criminal mentality, it’s the genuine sense of isolation and hopelessness that speaks the loudest, and so for those construing ‘The Warriors’ as mindless and brutish, set aside your expectations and give it a chance, because you may just learn that not all gang movies seek to glorify bloodshed, but instead tell a tale of circumstance over choice, and how the struggle to overcome oppression can only be won when people act together, no matter what.

Classic film that's stylistically shot and written

Great retro vibe looking back at NYC in 1978 with complete brutality

Great tension, characters, and film that captures a heightened version of New York in the late 70s

One of my all time favs!

The Warriors is weird. But it’s like a good kind of weird… sort of. My mouth was agape as I tried to comprehend what I was watching, and yet I found this movie fascinating. It spends the majority of its time showing the characters traveling. In fact, I think the opening 20 minutes consists of dozens of gangs just riding trains and walking with very little dialogue. And while the acting is hokey and the story is very basic, I thought the costume designs for the various gangs was great. Honestly, I can’t decide if The Warriors is annoying or artistic, so I’m just going to give it an average rating.

One of the best cult classics. 👍

Warriors isn't a good movie... the production quality, acting and choreography are all sub par. The gangs are almost cartoonish (the baseball gang? the ROLLERSKATING gang?). You kinda want to root for the warriors, but geez they are so dumb. I think the upside of this movie is maybe the shock value and the 'what the heck am I watching?' that keeps you hooked.

This is a classic movie. It is one of those movies, that despite being low budget, not very believable, and deeply flawed that caught the attention of a cult following. This movie still has impact 44 years later. Walter Hill's look at gang violence on a single night in and around New York City has become an iconic piece of film history. One thing is for sure, it makes people think twice about the notion that today is the most dangerous time to ride the subways in NY. The characters are memorable. The fight choreography is shoddy. There are many actors here that went on to much bigger careers. I prefer The Wanderers and The Lords of Flatbush on this genre but The Warriors has its place.

Is this really a five star movie? No, but I love it. I probably watch this once a year. David Patrick Kelly is amazing to watch. Quotable, memorable because of the combination of seriousness and silliness. Not everyone is likable, but you go for them, makes an interesting movie. Warriorsssss Come out to plaaayyayyyy!

Truly boring for such a cult classic...

I can’t fathom how anyone finds this movie entertaining. The characters have some of the worst dialogue, mannerisms, accompanied by horrible acting. This is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. So many trains, I hate every character with every ounce of my being. If I could rate this with negative stars I would. I wish I could pay to get back the time wasted watching this garbage film. Also I really wish Cowboy would’ve died.

Tough to judge this movie. If these are gang members, then I'm a UFC fighter. One guy was cut by a knife and acted like he's never seen a fight before. Cool idea for a story though.

First saw this as a kid when it was the movie for some telethon back in the very early 1980s, and still watching it now 40+ years later. As a then 10 year old boy, I remember wanting to be one of The Warriors so much, and tried to talk like them . . . The film showed a glimpse of the gritty, hardnosed city life of NYC teenagers in a dirty time period where you could almost smell the stench of last night's garbage still on the curb. It had all the elements to capitvate my viewing -- charismstic and over-the-top performances with memorable character lines, and some great action sequences matched with a very fitting soundtrack. And even some mystery, i.e., who was that radio DJ lady whose face you never fully saw (played by Lynne Thigpen)? You watched because you wanted to know if the boys were going to overcome the odds and make it back to the "C.I." Riffs leader: "You Warriors are good . . . real good". Swan: "The best". Cannot wait to see if the speculation comes true that this will be a Broadway musical. I can dig it!!

Lots of great parts that, unfortunately, do not equal a great sum. Walter Hill can deliver kinetic energy, but often fails with his direction of actors and dialogue.

The movie that set the standard for gang activity in Europe at least in the late 70's-early 80's.  Now, that's the not so glamorous part of it. But as a movie, a story it is one of a kind to ever been made. Well written, well acted, well produced/directed. Make sure to watch this one!

Really cool movie. I liked that it kept the serious vibe throught out the whole movie, without going into comedy or childish scenes. Nothing that blows your mind though.
