Critics Consensus

Dick Tracy is stylish, unique, and an undeniable technical triumph, but it ultimately struggles to rise above its two-dimensional artificiality.

Lynden Barber Sydney Morning Herald Bright, imaginative, and thoroughly entertaining. Dec 13, 2024 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune A visual delight and a dramatic letdown. Rated: 3/4 Jun 23, 2020 Full Review Bob Thomas Associated Press Forget the plot. The essence of Dick Tracy lies in characters and style, and there it exceeds last summer's clunky, over-produced Batman. Aug 8, 2019 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Here’s the working definition of style over substance, as Dick Tracy’s flaccid script is completely overwhelmed by some of the most tremendous production values seen in many a moon. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Terry Francis Southern Voice (Atlanta) There's something painful about a movie that fails on an artistic plane as high as the one touched by this film, but uncomplying characters do not a successful film make. Rated: 2.5/4 May 9, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Dick Tracy is a cleverly planned, marvelously executed, and singularly unsatisfactory film. Michael A From second number one, I was in love with this movie. It's comic-booky backgrounds and vibrant energy give it a flare that puts Warren Beatty in a great, great spotlight. It doesn't hurt to have Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino in competition with you either. And, wouldn't you know it, Madonna adds her subtle, not subtle flare to this wonderful tale of deception and what it means to love. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Blu B The cinematography, direction, and music is all good and the best things about this. There are some gorgous paintings, atmosphere, color, and it truly feels like a comic book. The practical effects are all great here too. The soundtrack very much reminds me of Batman 89' which makes sense. Wish it as a bit more catchy on it's own though and better used at times. The worst part here that drags this down is the editing which is just ok. The Madonna plot line, Tracy bonding with Tess & The Kid, Big Boy and all the croonies involved with trying to bring him down just all feel seperate. this follows a pretty predictable pattern of cutting between Tracy's personal life and the actual Noir plot but they just feel completely seperate throughout most of the runtime and just gets a bit hard to follow. And honestly at points boring. When the visuals and soundtrack take a backseat to the story it just can't hold as well. Everything else isn't bad though. Beatty is good as Tracy, and Pacino is so over the top but not bad. It probably would've helped if he toned it down just a bit though. Madonna is just alright and her scenes of her singing and all just don't feel that important and kind of hammed in. The "Twist" makes sense but it's just kind of lame and farfetched. Everyone else varies from being half decent to alright which is crazy given the absolute all star cast for this. Beatty is easily the best though. Tess is a bit forgettable and The Kid is honestly annoying. Any scene with those two just kind of slow things down. You know the other thing is Tracy himself isn't that interesting a character and kind of boring. We don't really get much background on him besides the basics and this relies on the relationships to flesh him out. But Tess and the Kid just can't really do that. Than the actual plot is hard to follow because of how jumpy it is and the dialouge isn't bad but it's jsut not sharp enough to carry more visually boring scenes. This has stronger bells and whistles than the actual underlying substance. If I had to lay my finger on the biggest issue here is it needed to find a better way to make Tracy interesting and tie in Tess & the kid to the actual crime plot. Or honestly just get rid of the kid altogether. It is a love letter to Noirs and the source material though. If your a die hard of fan of any actor in this or the source material it may be worth giving this a watch though. It's not broken at all. This has lots of potential for a remake. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/09/25 Full Review Garrett B It’s not bad nor good though the makeup, costumes, and production design help this film give some slack Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Ethan L This movie stands out and was ahead of its time. It is a great, wacky, colorful, crime movie following a detective who resembles the Man with the Yellow Hat who is struggling with balancing his person life and his obligations to the city. If they had let Warren Beatty make his PG-13 director cut it would have been a complete masterpiece. Because the movie is only 105 minutes it seems rushed at times and important relationships seem underdeveloped. Despite this it is a visually stunning movie with some of the best character design in film. The acting is good and I think this is a very underrated movie.
*I do have a slight bias having grownup watching this movie a lot* Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Joseph C My favorite comic strip movie of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Petros T The production design, costumes, prosthetics and in general the visuals of "Dick Tracy" are magnificent. Warren Beatty is very good, and the cast they've put together is impressive although some of them are barely recognizable under their makeup and perhaps a little underwhelming - I mean, getting Dustin Hoffman to do whatever the fuck he was doing ad infinitum isn't exactly the most brilliant casting choice. On the whole, it's a fairly interesting film even if the storyline is all too familiar. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews
