The Italian Job Reviews

Mar 23, 2025

THIS MOVIE IS BRILLIANT. It has a good plot, nice build up and the get away in the minis is awesome.

I'm sorry but this movie is genuely so boring, i couldn't even finish it, i feel like this movie it's enjoyable if 1) you love heist genre, 2) you're british or 3) if you have the humor sense of a gen X or older.

An amazing film of its time. It has a slice of adventure, a touch of spice and a sprinkling of comedy. You won't see skin on skin intimacy or guns and extreme violence. This is a 'caper' movie, not an action flick. It builds the story up to the climactic finale and it's well worth watching. Some younger viewers may be disappointed at the lack of non-stop action but if they take the time to absorb the story, they'll come away wondering what Charlie Croker's 'Great Idea' would have been!.. and will be thinking about the ending long after they've seen the film. That's a rare thing in movies these days. Most are instantly forgetable.

So slow I just stopped watching halfway. I usually scan forward or speed movies up, but literally nothing happens in this film. There is no comedy and no action. Avoid.

Brilliant cast, shame to waste the cars 😢😢😢

Fun, entertaining, campy, Mini Coopers are featured in some incredible car stunts and action, Michael Caine holds all this craziness together.

Could definitely be anchor bias on my part, but I think I prefer the F. Gary Gray version to this classic from 1969. That isn't to say I loathed watching this or anything like that. In fact, I think the final chase scene in this ultimately outshines anything I can remember from the remake. For me, though, it was the revenge element of the 2003 film that ultimately won me over to the side of the crooks in question. Here, you're given the more matter-of-fact approach — almost something you'd see out of a Bond sequel or something. The thief is working the eponymous heist because he's a thief, of course. It's what he does and he doesn't really need any better reason than that. I can totally see the appeal of it (especially for the era in question), but I know I'm far too overanalytically inclined to be satisfied with that reason and that alone. Throw in some occasionally dopey humor and that's most of why I think I'm where I'm at in relation to which version I like more. Still, I can't say the overall watch was bad for either.

The Italian Job is a pure British action/comedy, even though it drags on a little to long in the second act, the third act finishes the film with one of the best car sequences along with one of the ballsiest endings in cinematic history that still leaves film fans wondering what happened five decades later.

By today's standards slow moving and sort of dumb. Good for a few chuckles, but not much more. See the 2003 remake - smarter and more fun and it has Charlise Theron.

Absolutely loved Danny Ocean in this film. Plenty of thrills along the way. Can't wait to see Italian 12. Well done again Speilberg

There's nothing very clever about the heist itself—it's mostly just a pretense for several chase scenes. And there's so little character development that you may find yourself caring more about what happens to the cars than the people. The minis are kinda cool, I guess, but the famous ending really is great, and redeems what is otherwise a fairly forgettable film.

The driving sequences were excellent, and the cinematography was praiseworthy, but that's about it. The music was annoyingly repetitive ('the self preservation society...' over and over again), the prison scenes were stupid, the comedy wasn't funny at all, the combat was pathetically unrealistic, and the acting was disappointing. The story itself was very basic and predictable, and the ending was especially silly. There was no character development, with most of the characters being nothing more than extras. There was also no emotion at all besides the excessive celebration at the end. It would have been better as a serious heist film. Highly overrated.

It has a really basic plot, but it's still decent.

Michael Caine and Noel Coward are good. Movie is entertaining and the cliff hanger is literal.

Christmas Day, 3.30 pm. Thank you Channel 4.

Solid gold action sequences and crystal clear cinematography collide with mostly unsuccessful attempts at comedy and a somewhat sloppy narrative structure, resulting in decidedly mixed results for The Italian Job. Although the film's iconic final heist sequence is certainly worth the price of admission, it's a shame director Peter Collinson and screenwriter Troy Kennedy Martin couldn't figure out how to properly utilize Michael Caine's particular set of skills. A bit too silly for its own good.

*deep sigh of relaxation* Nothing beats driving around the swerving roads of Switzerland in an exotic sports car. Was not expecting that. What an opening. Apparently you shouldn't mess with this guy who just bulldozed your sports car off the side of the mountain with the driver still inside. Good ole British charm. I found the dialogue between the car garage manager and Michael Caine rather amusing and charming. They're really putting the whole free-loving sex thing in this movie. It's really interesting to see movies keep up with the trends of that time. Given that this is from 1969, it would make sense that already 10 minutes into the movie, he's already slept with about 10 women. Does Michael Caine always play a player? He's a straight up pimp. This is like a super campy, super British movie that focuses on the style that was goin on at the time. I didn't feel like I was really invested in the movie and quite frankly it was kind of meh. It like tries to be funny at times but falls flat. Idk if it's the style of British humor or what. I felt like I didn't care about anyone or anything that was going on. As if the writing was kind of lazy. The only interesting part was watching the whole plan and setup of the heist. The stunt driving for the mini coopers I have to say was impressive. Probably the highlight of this whole movie. I feel like there's a subtle political statement in this movie. Especially with all the prisoners cheering on the fact that the head of the prison is getting richer while they're still fucked. And the way that Britain stole money from Italy right under their noses maybe as a way to get back at them for being on the wrong side during WWII. Overall, the movie was kind of meh.

Simultaneously blending peak '60s British chic with timeless comedy that plays to the culture of the time as well as to classic goofiness, The Italian Job is more style than substance but is slick enough to get by. The film is often slow on the setup to the heist itself, but compensates on the back end with the great practical effects in the driving sequences. Best of all, the film retains a peculiarly British sense of humor without being relentlessly dry (the problem that often plagued such films as The Lavender Hill Mob), and isn't entirely surface-level; for instance the Mafia, despite being showcased as a threat to the protagonists, are usually seen lining up their members on cliffsides in suits for virtually no reason, then disappear without a trace like some sort of flash mob. (3.5/5)
