Critics Consensus

The Last of the Mohicans is a breathless romantic adventure that plays loose with James Fenimore Cooper's novel -- and comes out with a richer action movie for it.

Catherine Dunphy Toronto Star Anchored by a performance of almost Zen-like calm and focus by a lithe Daniel Day-Lewis and another of muted but fierce intensity by Madeleine Stowe, it is nothing less than a cinematic second coming. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Alexander Walker London Evening Standard A film that restores to the screen what it used to do best: grandeur of scale, intimacy of people, generosity of emotion, a subtext of saga and legend. Oh hell, what’s the word for it? Yes, “epic.” Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Eleanor Ringel Cater Atlanta Journal-Constitution In a sense, Mr. Mann has returned to the very roots of motion pictures. With its tumultuous flow of music and images, “Mohicans” is like a long-lost something from the era of silent movies. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Terry Lawson Dayton Daily News The rest of us can revel in what is certainly the best historically minded Hollywood movie since Glory, one that respects the intelligence of its story, its characters and its audience. Rated: 4/4 Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Arion Berger L.A. Weekly As an amoral and anti-political period piece, deeply invested in the futility of war, the movie's brute splendor is all the more moving because it's so extravagantly doomed. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Hal Lipper Tampa Bay Times The Last of the Mohicans is grand entertainment. Romantic, exciting, though unremittingly violent at times, it is rich in frontier lore and in its respect for the land that conquering settlers too often take for granted. Darrin N Great movie from start to finish Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Bruce H I just watched it again after a lapse of several years and I can say with confidence that this is the best movie I have ever seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Insomniac X Romantic war drama starts strong, with rousing music, charismatic performances, and immersive, beautiful settings. As the film reaches the halfway point, however, cracks in its plotting and characterization begin to show, causing it to fall short of the epic it could have been. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review M B A dream of a movie, Madeline Stowe is incredible and as always Michael Mann makes the finest of films! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Johannes S Great story with amazing performances. Underscored by the film's amazing soundtrack, it's a worthy blockbuster. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/09/25 Full Review Jeremy R One of the best movies ever made. I have watched this more times than I know. They don’t make movies like this anymore.
