Seven Years in Tibet Reviews

Apr 15, 2025

I loved this. Great cinematography, cast very good in character, amazing that it is actually based on true story, albeit dramatized cinema style. The fact that David Thewlis was permanently banned from entering China on account of his role in this, amazes me. Good viewing, will surely recommend

Seemed longer.

I have heard so much about this movie. So many people speak of it so highly and when my spiritual community voted to watch it in our movie vote, I thought, ‘We’ll. Now would be a good time to give it a shot!’ I’m glad I watched it so I can tell anyone who sees this, don’t bother! Unless you’re just wanting to pass some time watching an old Brad Pitt flick, the movie is too long, with several scenes that should never have made the final product. The story is predictable and the screaming and yelling at the beginning and throughout was definitely too much. They only needed one or two screaming scenes but there were at least three or more. Brad Pitt’s character development took place in Lhasa with the Dali Lama. This would have been a more attractive angle to have approached the storyline from. They could have also shown more about the mysticism and prophetic nature of the Dali Lama. They could have delved into explaining the rituals that were going on. This film really missed the mark in so many ways for me. I cannot and would not recommend it at all. Go watch something else. That’s what I’d say.

It's not Dr Zhivago but it still is a beautiful epic movie, following the footsteps of an ambitious Olympian athlete and mountain climber who became a prisoner of war in WW2, escaped and made his way all the way to Tibet and finally back home to Austria. A decade of history and spiritual journey, wrapped in 2 hours of great picturesque cinema. Well worth your time.

A good film, nothing amazing, just good. Seven Years in Tibet is a slowly paced film that works in my opinion. It dives into the two characters pretty decently. But the movie doesn’t dive into other characters very decently, so I think some of the movie’s flaws shows, but still I recommend this movie.

I didn't know much about Seven Years in Tibet before seeing it other than the title and the fact that Brad Pitt was in it. As I watched it, I kept wondering why filmmakers decided to tell Heinrich Harrer's story. While it had some interesting insights into Tibetan culture, I found the story to be dry and fairly uneventful. Also, Pitt's quasi-Austrian accent made me run to Google to make sure it wasn't just me that was distracted by it. Spoiler alert: it wasn't just me. And as the film dragged on, I found myself becoming less interested in what was going on. I did like John Williams' score, though.

I honestly don't understand why some people don't like this beautiful movie! Sure it might be a romanticized version of Tibet, but this movie intrigued me with interesting characters and arcs, a wonderful setting and a plot that is simple and yet so much. Would recommend, especially for history lovers. In some scenes it does feel a little slow.

It's a great and important historical movie. Critics must be ashamed for not supporting it enough.

Despite its poignant message, Seven Years in Tibet falls short of showcasing the true wonder of its fact-based story. Brad Pitt was not the best candidate to play Harrer, for his pretty blonde hair and babyface weren't suitable for the mature role he undertook. It was difficult to believe that he underwent the soul-altering character development of a man who befriended the Dalai Lama. Nevertheless, the breathtaking cinematography of Tibet's stunning landscapes and John Williams's beautiful score make it an enjoyable film regardless of its flaws and historical inaccuracies.

Important film on a rarely covered conflict. Well acted and written decently although it drags a bit at times. It also completely glosses over or rewrites the protagonists Nazi party affiliations which is concerning when the topic of the movie is often government tyranny and oppression of minorities. Still there is much to be admired in telling this story as beautifully as done here.

It really shows how far we have come in terms of representation and film politics, which makes it a small gem for those who remember it but only a curious one time view for streaming shelf dwellers.

This could have been so much better....I was distracted bt Brad Pitt's terrible accent, made the whole movie so silly! He ruined the movie for me.....however the book was interesting!

Heinrich Harrer's journey before the red invasion

Pretty pretentious. Doesn't live up to them.

A slow placed well acted beautiful film that you really need to be patient to appreciate the story of a mans redemption of his soul.

Story of Tibet and Heinrich Harrer. Pitt (a mountain climber) becomes friends with the Dalai Lama as Tibet is being taken by China. It's a story of the pursuit of peace on multiple levels.

I disagree with the American critics who in their their cultural bias seem to be looking for quick and easy plot lines. This film is a mediation. Enlightenment can take a lifetime and involve struggle and self-reflection. Very few of us will ever achieve it. I think this is one of Brad Pitt's finest and most subtle performances. He portrays the gradual transformation of the central character who is influenced both by the tragic world events and the wisdom of the young Dalai Lama who shows him that our humanity relies upon being humbled and self-less. The focus on Brad Pitts's accent says more about the shallowness of the reviewers than about his performance. We get from a film what we bring to it.
