I actually like this little thriller. It is often forgotten about, but has some good performances and the little suspense mystery was engaging. Being a Cate Blanchett and Keannu Reeves fangirl, I loved seeing them here

This was such a compelling movie with great acting and storyline. Giovanni Ribisi was the highlight of this one. It's definitely worth the watch.

Written by Billy Bob Thornton, directed by Sam Raimi, an A-list cast small-town mystery wrapped in the supernatural !!

Nota: 6

Before tackling the Spider-Man franchise, director Sam Raimi was taking something of a break from big genre movies, opting for smaller-scale thriller/dramas instead. One of those projects was The Gift, a supernatural thriller about a fortuneteller who reluctantly gets involved in a murder case. The film was co-written by Billy Bob Thornton, who had worked with Raimi on A Simple Plan a couple of years prior, and it starred Cate Blanchett as Annie, a small town fortuneteller, with a possibly genuine "gift". Annie is repeatedly threatened by Donnie (Keanu Reeves), a wife-beating husband, until a dead woman's body is found on his property thanks to one of Annie's visions and he is soon tried for murder. What follows is an Agatha Christie-esque whodunit with a purposely dodgy cast of characters and a Hitchcockian feel. The Evil Dead director is a lot more restrained than you'd expect here as the supernatural elements in the film are kept ambiguous enough until the last minute and there are only a couple of minor jump scares to be found. Cate Blanchett is excellent as the vulnerable, good hearted widow whose gift is both a blessing and a curse. Between the troubled and/or twisted locals she has to deal with on a daily basis, the three kids she's having to raise on her own and the murder mystery that ends up consuming her life, Annie feels like she's never far from a breakdown but she powers through, helping the people around her, standing up for what's right and this makes her endearing. The strong supporting cast provides the perfect contrast to the level-headed Annie, with Keanu Reeves taking on a much meaner role than usual and Giovanni Ribisi turning his nervous schtick all the way to 11. The film is appropriately moody and suspenseful, never going too over-the-top yet providing enough visual flair and shocks to prove effective. Where The Gift sadly stumbles is in its third act where the killer is finally revealed and it's all much too predictable. Raimi tries to present a final, arguably bigger twist after that but the whodunit is too much of a disappointment to save the ending, though even that can't ruin what is otherwise a very well made film. Despite its lack of a rewarding ending, The Gift remains a thriller worth seeing if only for the solid performances and Sam Raimi's sharp yet softer approach. I suggest you don't focus too heavily on who actually did the murder and, instead, sit back and enjoy the overall experience because this is an under-appreciated little movie that gets most things right and deserves some attention. Give it a go.

Washed down in the superstitious South, horror director Sam Raimi downsized his craft in standardized fashion and focused on what the subpar atmosphere could muster while attempting his own take of certain twist. Certainly tensed by the A-listed performances mainly surrounding a courtroom drama besides benefitting as the cinematic first for the aspect (or is that a stereotypical perception questioned?) admirably led by Cate Blanchett realizing her truest caliber. Though possibly influential by structuring in compiling accounts for eyewitness-based stories, it doesn't generate thrills as hoped. (B)

While it might move slower than an average horror movie, Th Gift is intriguing right from the start. Sam Raimi directs a cast of talented actors in this well-acted thriller that keeps viewers invested until it reaches its satisfying climax.

This movie could of done with more time spent on it's script as it ranges from the dull to melodramatic. As for the ending, the less said the better.

Every member of the cast gives exceptional performances. Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi especially, but Keanu manages to make himself utterly loathsome, and even small supporting cast are rock solid as lawyers, police, victim and dv victim. Nice creepy atmosphere, small town drama, good music... Why critics decide to bash I'll never understand.

I have always loved this film; such an underrated gem.

A solid southern gothic thriller, whose impact is amplified by the frenetic stylized filmmaking of Sam Raimi and a star-making lead performance from Blanchette. It's also a nice treat to see Keanu play such a bastard.

Overall, it's welcoming to see director Sam Rami deliver a thriller that carries his classic touch of horror and tackles the whodunit genre along with new aspects.  As a story, I found this journey quite enjoyable, and the finale is also unpredictable on the first watch.  The film has a great atmosphere and a few good unsettling moments throughout.  Performances are strong, with actress Cate Blanchett delivering an excellent character and bringing an extensive range of emotion and drama as her character tackles many hurdles.  The Gift doesn't demand countless rewatches, but it's a fun story with many elements that I admire and will always enjoy.

Giavanni Ribsi saved this movie. His acting, superb. If not for him, I would have watched this movie only once. Would have gave it a meh.
