Critics Consensus

While superbly acted and stylishly filmed, Hannibal lacks the character interaction between the two leads which made the first movie so engrossing.

Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal All of this opulence, together with extravagant set-pieces that go past grisly to grotesque (and then, in the climax, on to goony), can't compensate for the halting pace of a patchy script. Jul 15, 2023 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek Hannibal doesn't seem to be about anything but its own swank decadence. Hopkins, with his reedy voice and effete airs, is still quite delicious in the part that won him an Oscar. But 10 years later, Lecter has become more camp than terrifying. Mar 6, 2018 Full Review Paul Tatara CNN.com No tension, no rhythm and no sense of purpose ... unless you count helping "Faces of Death" fans feel more evolved. Feb 5, 2018 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast A bizarre adaptation of a bizarre novel, one has to give credit to Hannibal for willing to go to some of the places it does. The only true blight on the picture is the horrendous handling of the Clarice Starling character. Rated: 3/5 May 12, 2025 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast Despite some great gore and a fantastic Gary Oldman performance (under heavy make-up), Ridley Scott's take on Hannibal doesn't quite work. From the blurry action to a boring Clarice to copping out on the book's controversial ending, the film is meh Rated: 3 May 7, 2025 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia I find its sequel tasteless and I'm sure that, ironically, not even Hannibal Lecter would serve it cold. James B Not as engrossing as silence of the lambs Hannibal may not be a satisfying ending but it's has perfect acting and convincing scenes. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Laura G A perfect example of how a star cast and top director can not save a bad script. Silence of the Lambs was a masterpiece. Hannibal is a movie that never should have been made. Was this why Jody Foster declined? Silence of the Lambs was refined and terrifying in the best way. This movie was just goofy despite it's stylish sets. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Alexandria M Moore was a horrible choice as well as Scott for a director. Some movies just don't need a sequel Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Shaun R What an overrated character Hannibal is. The best part of this move was the 2 seconds scene where Aston Villa are seen on the tv. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Cleve H I was on a Hannibal Lecter binge so I started watching all of the movies. I had seen The Silence of the Lambs but not the others. This was the third movie I watched. Style and set wise this film is beautiful. As much as I love Julianne Moore, she and Anthony Hopkins lacked the chemistry that Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster had. Still, the movie isn't bad, but I will admit it is the weakest of the Hannibal Lecter franchise. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/29/25 Full Review Tatiana H I watched silence of the lambs a while ago. Now , following up watching Hannibal was good. The disfigured victim was sad to see but the sfx was good since a lot of disfigured victims look similar. Hannibal shows the public viewpoint on being drawn to stories of serial killers and psychopaths but never highlight the victims. This movie did a good job of depicting how victims tend to relive their nightmares everyday. Great suspense too. I would recommend this movie.
