Critics Consensus

Heist didn't cover any new ground, but the cast and Mamet's expertise with witty banter make it worthwhile.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire We watch a movie like 'Heist' for the virtuosity of the execution, for the wit with which Mamet writes his way through the conventions, and the pleasure his actors take in chewing on his dialogue, in all of its repetition, shop talk, and artful profanity. Michael B Great cast, memorable performances, excellent script and good production values. What more could you want? OK, a little bit of it requires some suspension of belief, but Hackman's performance overcomes any shortcomings in the film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/02/25 Full Review Frank P One of my all time favorite crime/caper films. Just watching Gene Hackman and Delroy Lindo act is worth watching - they give a master class in this one. Mamet's on the top of his game with the dialogue - plenty of quotes you'll remember, like: "I wouldn't worry about her, she could talk her way out of a sunburn" Crazy and implausible plot twists, but if you can dispense with disbelief, this film's thrilling ride and strong performances and dialogue make it well worth watching Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Joseph P Pleanty of twist and turns! Many however were too far fetched! Danny DaVito acting was not very beliveable! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/04/24 Full Review Alec B A fitting title for a movie that reduces this genre to its most basic elements (misdirection, pulpy dialogue, and ostensibly simple characters). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Steve D A lot of talent to produce the same thing we have seen a million times. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Good old-fashioned caper movie. More twists and turns than a box of corkscrews. From the pen of David Mamet. Don't make them like this anymore, and that's a shame. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
