Kids in America Reviews
Kids In America is more than just another teen movie, it's has a message to spread and came together in a very unique way. Principal Weller (Julie Bowen) is running for state superintendent and she wants her school to be perfect. All the troublemakers have been expelled and every little infraction means a long suspension. No one is happy about it, particularly the students, so they do the only thing they can, fight back! This film is based on a culmination of news stories from around the county, that feature students who were suspended for doing nothing more than expressing their first amendment rights. These stories are incorporated into the film and make up the basis for Weller's suspensions. As for the students, their ring leader is Holden Donovan (Gregory Smith), an honor student, and the last person you'd expect to be leading a student rebellion. I've long been a fan of Gregory Smith and this role was a detour from his normal routine. Smith always plays the sweet, lovable characters like Efram in Everwood or Dove in Rookie Blue, he's not known for comedy or for being the rebel. It was an interesting diversion that he pulls off quite well. The film is further supported by Julie Bowen and Nicole Ritchie, who are also playing roles that are out of their comfort zone. Kids In America is unique in that it's a comedy for teens that actually has a positive message. It also features a cast that is playing characters that they don't usually play, making for an even more enjoyable watch. Don't get me wrong I love comedies like Super Bad and 21 & Over, but it was a nice change of pace to see these kids acting out and getting into trouble for a cause, especially one that's near and dear to my heart.
This film is painful. From acting, stereotypes, to music, etc. Very dated, has not aged well. Thinks it's a lot cooler and smarter than it is. SKIP!
with better acting this could've been a decent film, but maybe that's not what the director was aiming for
This movie takes a light and funny approach to a real concern in some high schools - principals and teachers that run their schools with a political agenda. The cast was great and the story was definitely good to watch once.
It had a lot of potential to be way better than it was, although I still think it's a pretty good movie to watch. It has funny moments, but needed to develop the plot more.
When the credits start to roll does this movie hit home. Plus I noticed the movie Easy A bit the closing sceen sequence.
A good, slightly thought provoking film that will give teenagers another reason to 'fight the power' at school. 'Inspired' rather than 'based' on true events is an accurate description of this film, as it can't quite decide whether to be serious or give into teen-popcorn-dom. Its message of freedom of speech is at times hyped up and made as much of a spectacle as its stereotypical characters, who unrealistically decide to band together. Although the impetus is documentary the theme is at times muddied with over idealization of fictional film which is used to further a romantic subplot. Journalism is touched on but social upheaval and protest is literally given the stage. The film however does illustrate the intelligence of the characters and of non violent protest but is ultimately watered down with artistic licence and the avoidance of rebuke for provoking or persuading young viewers to copy the film. As a whole this film is good but the feeling I got from it was: this movie is true-ish, what they did was right kinda, we're not saying that you should do this too, but hey its enjoyable right! Which is downright hypocritical considering the plot.
As far as I'm concerned, Kids In America is very underrated. What you have here with this film is a comedy that exposes an important subject. People hate on this film because of the fact that Nicole Ritchie plays in this film. Well, her role I thought was so minimal that it really didn't bring anything memorable to the film. Her role wasn't an essential part of the film. I didn't care to see her on screen, and she didn't annoy me in the process. What I love about Kids In America is that it's very different that your usual Teen comedy. Where the usual teen comedy insults teens for what they usually "are", Kids In America takes a different, refreshing approach and creates something funny, charming but above all, smart. The casting choices are well done, and every actor is perfect for the part they played. The film is very entertaining, funny and well crafted. This is an underrated film that shouldn't be passed up. Most Teen comedies fail to capture what teen life really is about, but Kids In America is the only film of it's kind that is smart and exposes issues that people don't even care about. Kids In America is a better film than what people might think. A well acted film with laughs and drama about important teen issues. Sure the film could have been improved upon, but for what it does, it captures the essence of what growing up really is, and that is one of the reasons that this film works so well.
When i first saw the tralier to this movie i thought i t was crap. But I it came on tv and i really like the story and the chaters. Pretty awsome movie really.
The film itself is not great. The acting is weak, the production is very bland, and the story feels very disjointed. The redeeming merit is in the fact that they used inspiration from a number of events that actually took place, and each of those are thought provoking. They could've done so much more, but there is some value in at least trying.
I had my doubts about seeing this but I'm really glad that I watched it, it was a very good film. I'm a big fan of Gregory Smith, I enjoyed his work on Everwood, and he has been in some pretty good movies. He gives an excallent performance in this film as well. The actress who surprised me the most with her performance was Stephanie Sherrin. I thought that her performance was refreshing, credible, and touching. The movie would not have been as enjoyable for me if she had not been in it. The rest of the cast, or rather the supporting cast, does a fantastic job filling out the movie. One thing I didn't know about this movie was that the issues they raise in the movie are all real incidents that have happened to real kids throughout the States. I'm really glad I watched this.
this is a really amazing movie, which is probably not known all that well. It has a great message about standing up for what you believe in, and not letting people change who you are, also has a high school setting. Watch this movie, you won't regret it
Ok one of my new favorite movies it is so inspiring, sad, and it gives you that tingling feeling which only some movies can do. This movies was the best movie i have seen in a long time it has romance, comety, and a moving plot and its based on realy story and it makes you glad that didnt happen to you.And yes there is no sex scene but theres like 20 full minutes of girl and guy, girl on girl, and even some guy on guy kissing.Realy this movie had the best makeout scene ever. But it had some realy good actors some great actors realy like Caitlin Wachs and Gregory Smith and Stephanie Sherrin did amazing jobs the were perfect. Than the movie it self was amazing and the soundtrack is amazing its kind of like the american pie soundtracks but just as good.So if you are def, blind,a zombie or vampire, or anything else go watch this movie.
The cover said... Runaway this is an american pie like. But the movie is more intresting. Some good quote, some good idea... Surprised !!!
