Sleeping Dogs Lie Reviews

the movies was ok, but make most of us think what would you really share with your partner? some thing you know that would hurt the one you care for, best to keep some things quiet you share things, but if it will hurt your girlfriend/guy keep it to your self, this movie was well acted and it was (acted)

How truly lewd and vulgar can one comedy film get with it’s storyline involving such a disgusting sexual act on such an animal!!! Sleeping dogs lie is not a film you would want to see if you are especially an animal lover!!! Do not watch! You will regret!

Truly lewd and vulgar for a comedy film where bestility is involved!!! Unworthy of being watched or added to your own film library.

Goldthwait's audacity goes a long way, but it still doesn't make up for just incredibly shoddy filmmaking.

Amy, while in college, did something sexual that in reality is quite disturbing and has never told anyone about this secret until she is in a relationship with a guy who wants to marry, he loves her more than anything and love holds no secrets until...... A fucked up premise that could have been darkly hilarious, and it is in parts but boredom takes over every now and then.

A nice indie film about the truth and how sometimes it's best not to tell it for everyone's sake.

Another case of secrets ruining a relationship in what looks like typical made for cable junk format.

Bobcat is brilliant. Uncomfortable and hilarious.

Bobcat was still an amateur in the director's chair at this point, and it shows, but this is one of the nastiest, gutsiest comedies ever put on celluloid. It's hard not to be grabbed by its sheer stark audacity.

A long time ago in college Amy did a regrettable thing. She blew her dog. Yep. She saw her dog sprawled out on the floor and out of pure curiosity she decided to blow him. Now Amy isn't into Bestiality in any way. It was more like an experiment. Some in college experiment with their sexuality. Amy happens to be more daring than some I suppose. Time passes and the thought sort of still pops into her head. She usually shrugs it off, but lately she's been having these guilt trips ever since she met John, her fiancee. He's a suitable companion to Amy, but isn't as hip and cool with things as he appears to be. They discuss some of the grosses things they've ever done. Lots of sexual chit chatter between the two concerning their past indiscretions. When it comes to Amy, she can't bring herself to tell him about the time she blew a dog. What if he leaves her because of it? John seems like the type of guy who can handle such gross confessions. He even goes as far to tell her about one time in college he played a game with a few other guys called Shoot the Cookie. It's a game, as he describes, where guys jerk off onto a cookie, splooge all over it and then eat it. You can't get any gayer than that, but Amy is okay with it and assumes that if something that gross from John's past was easy for him to divulge then she might as well tell him. While staying at her parents home, her conflict of telling him is subsided by her own mother who also tells her a secret that her father doesn't even know. You see Amy's father thinks that his wife was a virgin before he met her, but didn't know of her other activities. Amy's mother had many lovers. One sexual escapade she had was with Elvis, but he mostly jerked off while watching her wrestle with another woman. Also with Roy Orbison when he was cuter. She still feels dirty and guilty whenever she hears Pretty Woman on the radio. This helps Amy to confide in John about her mistake. Unfortunately, John doesn't take it so lightly. He's disgusted. The scene where she tells him is handled well and Goldthwait makes it appear devastating while at the same time humorous. John may not be laughing, but we are with Amy who does think it's funny and it is. When her meth head brother overhears the confession, he unloads it onto the parents as well just to prove that his flawless sister isn't so perfect after all. So once the parents, her fiancee hear the worst about Amy they immediately ostracize her. She's heartbroken. Turns out being honest doesn't always pay off. There are just some things people are not willing to hear. This film starts off great and is funny in certain moments, but it veers off into dramatic territory and what could have been a hilarious film about Bestiality turns into a message movie about it's best to lie about past indiscretions because in the end it doesn't get you anywhere to be open and honest about everything. Well, DUH!

A woman who gave her dog a blow job during college reveals her indiscretion to her fiance and tries to save the relationship. Writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait continues to impress with another off-the-wall concept. He crafts the situations and plot with an ease that is surprising when one considers his eighties screaming comedy. He's also very good with actors, directing a very strong performance from his leading lady, Melinda Page Hamilton (Steve Agee isn't as good, but he can't win them all). The film's composition and pacing is amateur at best. We get short, talky scenes, followed by an expository shot, followed by more short, talky scenes. The result is stagnation, and Amy's emotional arc isn't balanced. She cries at the end of the first two acts, and the scenes are identical, the last revealing little new about her character. The film's theme is what's most interesting. Goldthwait's concept, that, in Amy's words, "It's important to lie. It's trying to live up to the lies that we tell about ourselves that makes us better people," has some validity. But what Goldthwait fails to consider is that no one is without baggage. The goal is to learn from it rather than carry it. While I don't think I can blame Goldthwait for presenting a view different from my own, I do think that his treatment of his theme is somewhat myopic. Overall, I have to get used to the idea that Bobcat Goldthwait has matured into a provocative, growing filmmaker, and Sleeping Dogs Lie is a good introduction to his oeuvre.

Come on now. People didn't enjoy this little film. Anyone with an embarrassing story that they don't want revealed will appreciate this...and I know we all do. Cuter than the story premise would have you believe.

Bobcat Goldthwait is a truly disturbed individual.

I thought this film was alright. It's not really my type of movie so I guess my opinion is biased. I just checked it out because Bobcat Goldthwait directed it. He is a great comedian, director and person.

Another awesome movie from Bobcat. Toche! It's not heavy on the black comedy but the message is there. This has so many layers that I can't begin to talk each of it. It deals with social perception of morals. how dirty the minds of men and the how far love will go. I don't like the ending though. white lies are not part of my personal principles. The movie feels like an indie but the plot will keep you hanging at every line.
