Critics Consensus

Though made with great skill, Funny Games is nevertheless a sadistic exercise in chastising the audience.

Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) Registers more strongly than the original as a film about privileged white people... Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald It's a tawdry kind of horror movie plot, given new meaning by Haneke's considerable intellect. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 5, 2008 Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) I'm not at all sure that, in manipulating the audience to make his points, Haneke isn't as guilty of exploitation as the filmmakers and the films he's attacking here. Rated: 3/5 Sep 5, 2008 Full Review Kathy Fennessy Seattle Film Blog Funny Games isn't meant to echo reality. Most of the incidents that transpire are "plausible," to borrow Paul's word, even if he and Peter aren't intended to resemble actual human beings, and Haneke doesn't burden the characters with a back story. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 31, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Don’t think of Haneke’s picture as a thriller, bound by typical thriller tropes, complete with an exciting thriller climax and gratifying conclusion. Think of it as an experiment to show you how Hollywood cinema has manipulated your expectations Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 5, 2024 Full Review Stephanie Archer Film Inquiry Michael Haneke‘s Funny Games finds little humor in the horror it unleashes on the unsuspecting Farber Family. A game to shock and horrify, this is not a film with a happy ending, but rather a terrifying understanding of the continuing cycle of violence. Feb 4, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Alison K I think this movie is amazing the actors and actress is great and I don’t care about the original if I don’t know the actors I’m not going to have attachment with them I don’t care it doesn’t matter to me I have to know you to see if I want you to live or not or I care about you at all people can disagree with me but it’s my personal opinion you don’t have to agree but I said what I said I really enjoy this movie and the performance I’m glad that villains one it was hard to watch the family suffer but it was good for the villains to finally win most movies now days 2025 they loses lot I really love the villains it was kind of interesting to see their interpretation and to see why they’re motivated to do something like this I have seen this movie so many times it was really good I love at the end the creepy smile wink at the end Micheal Pitt is amazing villain Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Julian S Whichever version you watch, FUNNY GAMES is a taut, unflinching study in discomfort with a lingering aftertaste. The U.S. cast edges slightly ahead, but both are excellent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Claudia R Movie was so infiuriating i didn't like it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Jeremy S Do not understand the low score on here. One of the most gripping movies I have ever seen. And Tim and Naomi to boot. It's making me question the collective wisdom of Rot Tot Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review Loof S Boring, unexciting and predictable Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Jack M Brilliantly executed work Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Read all reviews
