Imagine That Reviews
He's the best, I'm glad he's starting to make more movies
I was having a tough day and I needed something to cheer me up so I went with Eddie Murphy. This film was really heartwarming and I had a lot of fun while watching it! I love Eddie Murphy and I loved him in this film! His chemistry with his daughter in the film is just really amazing and I would call it the best part of the film. I honestly didn't expect to laugh this much while watching this movie, I just laugh at anything and Murphy's humor is just on point and I had a lot of fun. This was a really great heart warming movie and it did it's job well in my opinion. As much as I enjoyed the film it felt like it was still lacking something which I am unable to figure out and Thomas Hayden's character was pretty underwhelming and could've been written in a better way. I went through the reviews of the film and I was kind of shocked because I didn't expect that negativity and to be honest it isn't that bad and I don't think this film deserves that amount of hatred. I won't say that you have to put your brain aside to enjoy it because that would be an insult to it's writing , but you can watch it to just have fun and relax. Overall I would say it's a fun film and I thoroughly enjoyed it irrespective of what people had to say about it.
Maybe I just don't have any imagination but this was horrible. I kept thinking to myself that this was going to go somewhere that maybe they would actually visualize the imagination on the screen but it never happens. It seems like a very overtold story it happens in a lot of family movies about a parent trying to reconnect with a child. It had some moments that were okay but it irritated me enough to want to log into rotten tomatoes and write a review and I don't come here often
This is the worst Eddie Murphy movie I've ever seen. So boring (I lost count of how many times I fell asleep trying to watch it) and just plain stupid (Imaginary friends know his job better than he does? Um, okay....) . I can think of a million ways that it could have been better-starting with a better leading man, a better plot, some humor, etc, etc....
Decent watch, not likely to watch again, and can't really recommend. As excited to as I was to watch Eddie Murphy again, this was a little disappointing. The beginning of the movie makes it seem like it's going to be like Hook, but it quickly diverges away from it being an Eddie Murphy movie: the daughter is the real protagonist. Her dad becomes a middle part of a story that is too full of reality and not enough of imagination. Usually, the formula is straight man and funny man, but with this family movie set in high end adulthood they decided to go two straight men losing there minds over a promotion. It just doesn't make for a great story in the middle. There is a wonderfully touching premise of a daughter and father growing closer together, but that's more of the beginning and the end.
A fun, heartwarming movie, and Eddie Murphy and Yara Shahidi shine. There is a reason why variations of certain plots keep getting made, and that's because they work as entertainment. And, given the cast and setting, I thought this wasn't just a run-of-the-mill take on the theme.
Released during a time when lame 21st century family comedies were at the height of their power in cinemas, I was expecting Imagine That to be the most cringy, obnoxious film ever made. Instead, it's just bland. Eddie Murphy and the child star who I don't think has had any major roles since do a good job and I was surprisingly invested in the actual plot once it gets going but here's the thing: it has a hard time appealing to one or the other. The plot revolves around financial advice which children won't care about whilst adults won't be amused much by a fully grown man wanting a blanket that takes his daughter to a not-so-imaginary world we never actually get to see because Paramount needs those bigger budgets for the G.I. Joe movie and The Last Airbender. Actually, I found it funny to hear him say "I want my goo-gaa" Though unfortunately, it's revealed in context that it's not necessarily meant to be regarded as funny. And all the cliched conventions about the protagonist bonding with a relative for ulterior motives before realizing the error of their ways. I've seen this type of stuff executed much better on The Simpsons. Imagine That didn't have me facepalming as much as I thought it would but if you want to put on an Eddie Murphy film to keep kids quiet, this one likely won't do much to alleviate their boredom.
Terrible Eddie Murphy kids movie.
Second time watching this movie. Its sweet and feels original. Adresses adult themes. Eddie Murphy delivers subtle to silly but it all fits. Very masterful. The lil girl helps carry the film on her tiny lil shoulders, awww bless!
Come on guys! Seriously? OK maybe I am on my own here. Admittedly this isn't Eddie Murphy's finest hour but the little girl stole every scene she was in. Yes the father character was "bad" to start with but that was kind of the point of the film. No one ever says they don't like the Christmas Carol because Scrooge is miserable and mean. ok this isn't on a par with Dickens but to say its lacking in morality is like saying Mrs Doubtfire was a psychotic deviant. if your not a cynic and you have a heart for (dysfunctional) family comedies then this is worth checking out. thank you for reading my rant. :)
This isn't as bad as some say it is. The little girl was adorable. Evan: how about I get you some scones? Boy: scones? What am I, the queen of England?
