What to Know

Critics Consensus

12 Strong has a solid cast, honorable intentions, and a thrilling, fact-based story - all of which are occasionally enough to balance a disappointing lack of depth or nuance.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Unfortunately the movie's central philosophical conflict, between the captain and an Afghan warlord, features dialogue like "Your mission will fail because you fear death." Mar 10, 2020 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian This is an intense, serious war film. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 9, 2018 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald The action is frequent and gripping, the heroism present but understated, and the sense of tactical complexity has survived the script-writing process, so there is more geo-political subtlety than one expects from a post-9/11 American war movie. Rated: 3/5 Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Kip Mooney College Movie Review Has a memorable story to tell but does it in an unmemorable way. Rated: C+ Aug 24, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse For every war cliché there is another scene that offers insight into the difficult and confounding task the men have ahead of them. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 28, 2021 Full Review Matt Cipolla Film Monthly It's more of a series of set pieces tenuously strung together . . . the political blinders it has on regarding its events' consequences speak to the movie's lack of intention. Arky.H G Although I don't know the story behind what happened in 2001 very well, this film turns out to be very entertaining for what it offers. It's full of history, motivation, and values. I also like the fact that some of the sets are completely real. Everything was filmed outdoors. The only thing missing for this film to be a gem was for us to empathize with the rest of the Squadron, since very little is explored about them, and we are not affected at all if something bad happens to them. The rest of the film—The War, the battles, The Enemy—are very good. 🪖 I give it a 4-star rating because of how good the film was.⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ok. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/28/25 Full Review Dane B. M Because it's a true story and done so well in the fighting scenes I'm recommending it. Navid Negahban is very good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Ch W Not normally one for war films but this was a great watch and very eye opening! Did not realise it was a true story - extraordinary for the soldiers involved Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Shane O Unbelievable true story. Great action edge of you seat stuff. Would watch it again Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/12/25 Full Review Nick M It was ok, nothing new. Plenty of action as to be expected, but overall no real character depth so felt a bit hollow to me. If you’re after an easy no effort watch this would be a good option. If you want depth, maybe this wouldn’t hit the mark.
