A very engaging drama loosely based on Eminem's troubled upbringing in the streets and trailer park of Detroit. Good balance between comedy and drama. Eminem does a great job playing himself, with enough humility and vulnerability to make him human, but enough feisty passion to make us root and clap for him when he finally wins. I love his group of friends. They're all hilarious and you really feel the bond between the group. The love interest is really cute, even if the drama feels a bit possessive considering they only had a one-night stand before the confrontation with Wink. But I suppose that's part of B-Rabbit's character arc since that's around his lowest part as he's turning on everyone. The freestyle rap battles are the highlights of the movie, with the best saved for last, followed by the iconic "Lose Yourself" to wrap up the movie. It's not perfect, but it's a damn good musical biopic that avoids that pitfalls and focuses squarely on Eminem’s humble beginnings in Detroit.

8 Mile hits all the high notes of a grounded semi fictional retelling of Eminem’s life before stardom. It immerses the audience in the authentic world of Detroit’s underground hip-hop battles and street rivalries boasted from solid performances from Kim Basinger, the late Brittany Murphy, and Mekhi Phifer, who skillfully narrate the story, ensuring its authenticity to Eminem’s base life. Grading: A-
